Wigan and Sheffield United are currently on course to exit the Championship via opposite ends ahead of their meeting on Monday evening.

The Latics are languishing in the relegation zone but United are on course for a return to the Premier League in second place.

They can highlight their promotion credentials here and an away win at 21/20 is our opening Wigan vs Sheff Utd prediction.

Wigan Odds

Kolo Toure was an eye-catching appointment as the new Wigan manager and will take his place in the home dugout for the first time.

His reign began last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Millwall, where Will Keane’s opener was quickly cancelled out by Zian Flemming.

It was the second half that particularly pleased Toure, with his side nullifying any threat from the Lions and marking his managerial debut with a point.

He said: “It was a good game, we played against a really good side, it is always tough to come to Millwall and to try to get something out of the game.

“As we know, they have been winning most of their games here, and we knew it was going to be tough, but I am very proud of my players, we played how we wanted to play, we created chances and we scored.

“They came back but I think second half we were still very dangerous and maybe we could have scored a winner but I think it is a good point and I am very proud of the players.

“It is incredible what they have done, we have only been working for eight days and the way they performed this afternoon was incredible.

“The plan that we put on, they stuck to that and they were confident on the ball, making great passes, breaking the line and stepping up on passes from the centre-backs – they all played very well.”

A full week on the training ground will have helped Toure but this is a team which has lost six of their last nine games with just one win in that time.

They have only managed eight goals in 11 home matches so an away win to nil may be worth the extra risk at 11/5 in the Wigan vs Sheff Utd odds.

Sheffield United Odds

A first-half goal from captain Billy Sharp was enough to earn United victory at home to Huddersfield in a lacklustre Yorkshire derby at Bramall Lane last weekend.

Iliman Ndiaye returned from World Cup duty with Senegal and it was his assist which provided Sharp with the all-important goal.

While they were unable to add to their lead, United’s options off the bench were impressive with Sander Berge, Oli McBurnie and Reda Khadra introduced as second-half substitutes.

That strength in depth could prove important during a hectic festive period and if they can get in front early on, they look well placed to control the game.

For the last of our Wigan vs Sheff Utd betting tips, we’re backing the Blades to win both halves at 5/1 as they have in the last two meetings with the Lancastrians.
