With COVID-19 causing havoc among the sporting world, we are taking a look at the latest football coronavirus news in terms of fixtures being postponed and leagues cancelled.

Major leagues and competitions have been shut down around the globe, with a number of high-profile players and managers having been affected by the disease.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

UEFA has postponed Euro 2020 until the summer of 2021, while the Euro 2020 play-offs, due to be played in March, have been postponed.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE & EUROPA LEAGUE

All Champions League and Europa League fixtures have been suspended until further notice.

ENGLAND

The Premier League, EFL, FA Cup competitions, Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship are all postponed “until it is safe to resume”.

Premier League clubs will discuss the possibility of restarting competition in June when they gather for a shareholders meeting.

Meanwhile, the 2021 Nations League finals and UEFA Under-21 European Championship have been postponed.

The women’s European Championship, scheduled to be held in England in 2021, has been pushed back to July 2022.

SCOTLAND

The Scottish Premier League has been suspended and could still be cancelled with the reconstruction of the league being looked at.

The Scottish Championship, League One and League Two have been cancelled but only after a delayed and confused vote.

ITALY

Group training has been given the green light from May 18, although no date for Serie A to resume has been confirmed.

SPAIN

Individual training has been approved to resume from May 4, although no date for La Liga to resume has been confirmed.

GERMANY

The Bundesliga is not expected to return until at least May 16.

It was hoped the league could start again on May 9, with clubs having already returned to training, but the date has now been pushed back.

FRANCE

Ligue 1 became the second major European league to be cancelled due to coronavirus.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced no sporting events, even those behind closed doors, could take place before September.

Philipe said: “The 2019-2020 season of professional sports, including football, will not be able to resume.

“It will not be possible, neither to practice sport in covered places, nor team or contact sports.”

The league has confirmed PSG have been awarded a ninth title after the division was decided on a points-per-game system.

PORTUGAL

Primeira Liga matches have been suspended indefinitely after officials had previously considered playing behind closed doors.

NETHERLANDS

The Dutch Football Association has decided to end the season with no champions, no promotion or relegation and European qualification decided on the existing league table.

The KNVB has called time on the campaign following the Dutch Prime Minister’s decision to ban all sporting events until September due to the coronavirus, with Ajax missing out on being crowned champions.

RKC Waalwijk, who were almost to certain to be relegated, have avoided the drop along with Alan Pardew’s ADO Den Haag, who also looked vulnerable. No teams from the Eerste Divisie will be promoted.

USA

Major League Soccer has suspended all matches, with a return target date of May 10.

A statement read: “MLS remains focused on playing the entire 2020 season and is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing MLS Cup in December, as the league did prior to the 2019 season.”
