Championship relegation odds: Warnock in to try and rescue Boro

Middlesbrough are 333/100 in bwin’s Championship relegation odds after appointing Neil Warnock as manager to replaced the sacked Jonathan Woodgate.

Boro are sitting outside the bottom three on goal difference after resuming their season with a 3-0 home defeat by Swansea on Saturday.

Woodgate took charge of 41 games but won only nine of them and, with eight Championship fixtures remaining, the club have turned to Warnock to try and rescue them.

The widely-travelled Warnock, whose lengthy managerial career has included spells at Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, QPR and Leeds, has been out of the game since he left Cardiff in November.

Boro have won just one of their last 12 Championship matches and now face trips to fellow strugglers Stoke and Hull.

Stoke have eased out to 14/1 for the drop despite sitting only two points above the bottom three.

Michael O’Neill’s side extended their unbeaten run to five games when drawing 1-1 at Reading while Hull are 3/4 to go down after losing 1-0 at home to rivals Charlton, who are 7/5 in bwin’s Championship relegation odds.

The Tigers have now lost their last five games and will be without the services of skipper Eric Lichaj, deputy Jackson Irvine, Stephen Kingsley and Marcus Maddison.

They were unable to negotiate agreements with the club ahead of their contracts expiring on June 30.

Terriers lacked bite

Huddersfield are now looking over their shoulders with just one point and two places separating them from the bottom three after a 2-0 home defeat by Wigan.

Manager Danny Cowley, whose side are quoted at 333/100, said: “We were really short of the levels that we’ve got to in recent weeks in the preparation games that we’ve had and also in training. It’s a huge disappointment.

“Since September when I joined this club, when you only have one point after nine games, you know that you’re going to be in a relegation battle.

“You know that with eight games to go you’re not going to be out of that relegation battle and you’re going to be in and around it all season.

“It’s going to go to the wire. Nothing has changed in that respect. We need to look at what happened, learn from it and just come back and respond.”

Wigan eased out to 10/1 after extending their unbeaten run to seven games to move three points clear of the relegation zone.

Barnsley are four points adrift of safety and are quoted at 9/25 after they made a winning return by beating QPR 1-0 at Loftus Road.

Nathan Jones was unable to mark his Luton return with a win as they drew 1-1 at home to Preston and they are a point further back and 3/25 for an immediate return to League One.
