Scotland will be looking to exorcise the demons of their horror show in Kazakhstan when visiting San Marino in Sunday’s second Euro 2020 qualifier.
Alex McLeish’s side simply must make amends against the Group I whipping boys if they are to have any hope of getting back in contention to progress.
We’re going with 19/20 for an away win by more than three clear goals as our opening San Marino vs Scotland prediction.
A Look At San Marino’s Betting Odds
San Marino has a population of about 33,500 and they are officially the worst national team in the world – rated 211th in the FIFA rankings.
They began their Euro 2020 campaign in typical fashion with a 5-0 defeat in Cyprus on Thursday, which was a 27th consecutive defeat.
To be fair, Franco Varrella’s side did not ship many goals in their last two home games – losing 1-0 against Moldova and 2-0 against Belarus in the Nations League.
However, this is a big step up in class from those fixtures, on paper at least, and we like 11/2 for a 4-0 away win from the San Marino vs Scotland odds.
A Look At Scotland’s Betting Odds
Scotland were simply never at the races when hammered 3-0 by Kazakhstan, a team who had only won three of their previous 40 competitive matches.
That was a major setback in a pool which also features Belgium and Russia and McLeish’s men have given themselves a mountain to climb to make the top two.
Assistant coach Peter Grant admitted: “If you don’t do the small details, it doesn’t matter what level you are playing at, you can be punished, and that was proven.
“We played too safe at times. We passed the ball slowly and across, instead of in-between or beyond.
“The players are obviously disappointed and as a staff we are gutted because it wasn’t the performance we expected from this group of players.”
However, Grant insists there is a determination to quickly put things right, as he told the SFA Twitter account: “They have to make a statement. It’s not about looking to – they have to do it.
“It doesn’t matter who you play, you have to earn it. There are no givens in any football match. You have to earn everything you get in a football match.”
Surely there is too much desire, professionalism and quality in this squad to be so lacklustre in back-to-back outings.
Let’s finish off our San Marino vs Scotland betting tips by taking 29/10 for the visitors to be 2-0 up at half-time.
Cyprus 5-0 SAN MARINO
Kazakhstan 3-0 SCOTLAND
Head-to-head: Scotland 5-0 San Marino, San Marino 0-2 Scotland, Scotland 4-0 San Marino, San Marino 0-2 Scotland
