West Ham vs Arsenal: Gunners too good for Hammers again

Kick-off: 1400, 16/04/2023

Title-chasing Arsenal are backed to return to winning ways in Sunday’s London derby at West Ham.

The Gunners have a fine head-to-head record against the Hammers, winning six of their last seven Premier League encounters and drawing the other.

United have at least netted in five of those matches, though, so 11/5 for an away win and both teams to score is our first West Ham vs Arsenal prediction.

Hammers struggling versus top teams

David Moyes made six changes for Thursday’s 1-1 Europa Conference League draw against Gent in Belgium, so that allays any fatigue factor fears.

January loan signing Danny Ings put West Ham in front against the run of play just before half-time but the Buffalos deservedly levelled after the break.

“That’s the reason we brought Danny in, because he has got goals in him,” said Moyes. “If we create chances, he will take them.”

United had previously eased their relegation worries with a 1-0 victory at Fulham, having also beaten struggling Southampton by the same scoreline this month.

However, in between those scrappy victories, the Hammers were thrashed 5-1 on home turf by Newcastle, which continued their poor record against top clubs this term.

They have only picked up two points from seven encounters with sides in the first five places!

Looking at the West Ham vs Arsenal odds, we like 7/2 for the Gunners to prevail by exactly two goals.

Last West Ham EPL line-up: Fabianski, Cresswell, Zouma, Coufal, Ogbonna, Fornals, Soucek, Rice, Antonio, Ings, Bowen.

Arteta backs Arsenal to respond

Arsenal’s run of seven straight league wins came to an end when they drew 2-2 at Liverpool last weekend.

The Gunners led 2-0 inside half an hour thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, but Mohamed Salah pulled one back before the break.

In the second period, Salah pushed a penalty wide of the post but Roberto Firmino equalised for the Reds in the 87th minute.

Aaron Ramsdale then had to make two fine saves in the closing stages to ensure his side escaped with a share of the spoils.

Mikel Arteta was aware of how Arsenal failed to press home their early dominance and began to retreat under pressure as the match went on.

“If we score 3-0, maybe the crowd doesn’t get too excited,” said the Spaniard. “After that, they scored the goal and that changed the momentum and the hope.

“Still, in the second half we have to play more. That’s the lesson, stick to what we’ve done in the first half, play with our personalities and that’s the way we have to continue to play.”

Arteta backed his team to react positively, though, adding: “We’ve been responding for 31 games now.”

Martinelli has scored in two of the last three renewals of this fixture and 5/1 for him to break the deadlock at London Stadium completes our West Ham vs Arsenal betting tips.

Last Arsenal line-up: Ramsdale, White, Gabriel, Holding, Zinchenko, Partey, Odegaard, Xhaka, Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.
