We’re tracking the 2023 NFL Draft odds for clues on who Carolina are expected to select with the first overall pick on April 27.
The Panthers completed a blockbuster trade with Chicago for the right to choose their number one prospect from college football.
With Carolina in need of new franchise quarterback, it will be a shock if they don’t grab a signal caller in Kansas City.
Here are the leading candidates and their 2023 NFL Draft betting odds to go first:
CJ Stroud @ 4/7
Coleridge Bernard Stroud was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2021 and 2022 after starring for the Ohio State Buckeyes, finishing third behind Caleb Williams in this year’s voting. The 21-year-old threw for 81 touchdowns over the past two season against just 12 interceptions. He passed for 348 yards and four TDs as the Buckeyes were beaten 42-41 by Georgia in the play-off semi-finals. With his cool decision making, quickness at releasing the ball and accuracy, Stroud has been compared to 2020 top pick Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals. Market moves highlighted how Travon Walker had edged ahead of Aidan Hutchinson 12 months ago and the smart money has been for Stroud this time.
Bryce Young @ 7/4
Young became the first Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy in 2021 after leading the Crimson Tide to a 13-2 record. The 21-year-old added another 11 wins to his tally last term, being named MVP in a 45–20 victory over Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl. During his college career, he threw 80 TDs and 12 interceptions, while running in seven more scores. Blessed with great natural talent, vision and mental alertness, but there have been question marks about his size for the pro game at 5ft 10in and just under 200lb.
Anthony Richardson @ 4/1
Richardson’s college exploits were not on the same level as the top two in the NFL Draft betting, only emerging as a starter for the 6-6 Florida Gators last season. He passed for 17 TDs and nine interceptions during that campaign, but established himself as a dual threat by adding nine scores on the ground. Built like Cam Newton, incredible arm strength is Richardson’s main asset as a passer and some believe he has the highest ceiling of all the players in this class, but erratic tendencies make him a possible boom-or-bust project.
Will Levis @ 14/1
After struggling to get game time with the Penn State Nittany Lions for two seasons, Levis transferred to Kentucky and shone for the Wildcats. The 23-year-old had 43 passing TDs and 23 interceptions in his last two campaigns, rushing in 11 more scores. Levis hails from a family steeped in football history and has ideal size, being 6ft 4in and over 230lb. His toughness is also unquestioned but needs to improve his decision making and consistency in the passing department.
