Peru vs Paraguay: First quarter-final foes hard to split

Kick-off: 2200, 02/07/2021

Stadium: Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico

TV: BBC Digital

We’ve reached the business end of Copa America and a tight tussle is on the cards in the opening quarter-final between Peru and Paraguay.

Los Incas would traditionally be expected to shade this encounter but the absence of several key forwards could just even things up in Goiania.

We reckon 19/10 for a draw at the end of normal time is the way to go with our first Peru vs Paraguay prediction.

A Look At Peru’s Betting Odds

Jefferson Farfan, Paolo Guerrero and Edison Flores are all missing from this tournament, having netted 78 international goals between them for Peru.

Los Incas looked set to struggle after being brushed aside 4-0 by Brazil in their Group B opener but went on to show great spirit.

Ricardo Gareca’s side upset Colombia 2-1, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Ecuador and shaded Venezuela 1-0 thanks to a strike from former Watford winger Andre Carrillo.

Those results were good enough to see them finish second behind the Selecao in that section and raise hopes of further success in the knockout rounds.

A lack of international experience up front is countered by established players such as Carrillo, Christian Cueva, Renato Tapia and Yoshimar Yotun just in behind.

Carrillo has now netted 11 times at this level and 7/2 for him to score at any point again here appeals from the Peru vs Paraguay odds.

A Look At Paraguay’s Betting Odds

Paraguay were only beaten on penalties by Brazil at this stage two years ago and are arguably in better shape this time around.

Los Guaranies kicked off their Group A campaign by coming from behind to beat Bolivia 3-1, with Angel Romero hitting a double.

In between narrow 1-0 losses to Argentina and Uruguay, they also managed to see off Chile 2-0, with Newcastle playmaker Miguel Almiron converting a penalty.

West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena is another familiar face in a nicely-balanced squad, well managed by former Celta Vigo, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao boss Eduardo Berizzo.

San Lorenzo winger Romero has caught the eye in this competition and did bag a brace when Paraguay drew 2-2 with Peru in an October World Cup qualifier.

Let’s finish off our Peru vs Paraguay betting tips by taking 14/5 for him to get on the scoresheet once more.
