MK Dons vs Liverpool: Reds may lack rhythm

Liverpool have bigger fish to fry this season but are firm favourites to avoid an upset when they start their EFL Cup campaign with a trip to League One opposition.

MK Dons are huge underdogs and back-to-back home defeats suggests this should be a routine win for the Reds regardless of team selection.

We suspect this could be a closer game than the odds suggest, though, and under 3.5 goals at 4/5 is our opening MK Dons vs Liverpool prediction.

A Look At MK Dons’ Betting Odds

MK Dons will face a very different challenge on Wednesday night to the one they had at the weekend.

On Saturday they met previously winless Southend, who defended in numbers after taking an early lead and held on for a 1-0 victory.

The Dons also went down 1-0 at home to Ipswich last Tuesday and manager Paul Tisdale was left to rue his side’s wastefulness in front of goal after the Southend game.

“We should have scored, we had over 90 minutes to score a goal against a team who were intent on defending,” he said.

“We put in a lot of effort and forward thrust, but we have to be better at putting the ball in the net – it is easier said than done and we have some work to do.

“It is two 1-0 defeats for us in the space of a week at Stadium MK – we are very disappointed but we have to learn from what we have not done, and that is scoring a goal.

“We are not at full strength with our creative players at the moment but we have got to find a way – we should still be putting the ball in the back of the net.”

That suggests a comfortable night for the Reds defence so an away win to nil looks a solid addition to our MK Dons vs Liverpool betting tips at 9/10.

Last MK Dons line-up: Nicholls, Lewington, Walsh, Martin, Brittain, Poole, McGrandles, Houghton, Boateng, Kasumu, Nombe.

A Look At Liverpool’s Betting Odds

Liverpool have made a dream start to the Premier League season and are five points clear of Manchester City in the title race after Sunday’s 2-1 victory at Chelsea made it 15 league wins on the bounce.

It came at a price with Sadio Mane hobbling off injured and there seems little chance of Jurgen Klopp risking his star players in this fixture, which is the third of four successive away games.

Winning the Premier League and retaining the European Cup will once again be the focus for Liverpool, who fell at the first hurdle in both domestic cup competitions last season and have lost four of their last five games in the FA Cup or League Cup.

We’re not expecting an upset here but a much-changed team is unlikely to play with the same kind of fluidity and rhythm that has blown teams away in recent seasons.

With that in mind, a 2-0 away win is our final pick from the 25/4.

Last Liverpool line-up: Adrian, Van Dijk, Robertson, Matip, Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Firmino, Mane, Salah.
