Newcastle are fancied to boost their hopes of a Premier League top-four finish at the expense of Tottenham at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Both teams suffered setbacks last weekend, but the Magpies have been far more convincing overall in terms of recent performances.
Punters can get 5/6 for United to prevail here and that is our first Newcastle vs Tottenham prediction.
United must forget Villa blip
Newcastle’s run of five straight wins came to a crushing halt when they were beaten 3-0 away to Aston Villa.
Two goals from Ollie Watkins after Jacob Ramsey’s opener put Eddie Howe’s side to the sword at Villa Park.
Howe labelled that his team’s worst display of the season, stating: “We weren’t great, hugely disappointing in a big fixture.
“But the lads have been so consistent through the season these things can happen, we just now need to focus on the response.
“At this stage, with so few games to go, you have to focus on what’s ahead rather than what’s gone…we need to make sure we are not that team again.”
The Magpies can take heart from their last home match, which saw them dominate Manchester United in a 2-0 victory.
That was followed by a 5-1 win at West Ham and a 2-1 success when visiting Brentford, so Newcastle shouldn’t get too hung up over the Villa blip.
Looking at the Newcastle vs Tottenham odds, we like 15/4 for the hosts to oblige 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1.
Last Newcastle line-up: Pope, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Burn, Joelinton, Willock, Guimaraes, Gordon, Isak, Murphy.
Spurs have many issues
Tottenham arguably suffered an even more damaging blow when losing at home to Bournemouth, even though they only went down 3-2 in stoppage time.
Son Heung-min’s early strike was cancelled out by Matias Vina and Dominic Solanke then pounced on a Davinson Sanchez error.
Arnaut Danjuma levelled for Spurs late on but Dango Ouattara landed a sucker-punch as they went in search of a winner.
Sanchez was booed off the pitch by his own fans when substituted in the second half, which did not sit well with captain Hugo Lloris.
The keeper told beIN Sport: “I’ve never seen this in my career. I feel really bad for Davinson.
“He’s a team-mate, he’s a friend and he’s been fighting for the club for many years now, and it’s just sad.
“The story is sad for the club, for the fans, for the player. It’s something you don’t want to see in football.”
Tottenham had previously been on a five-match unbeaten run, but that bare stat masks some patchy performances before and after Antonio Conte’s departure.
Spurs only drew away to struggling Southampton and Everton and were more than a little fortunate to beat Brighton on home turf.
We’re happy to take the London side on in this tough test and 8/1 for Kieran Trippier to score at any time completes our Newcastle vs Tottenham betting tips.
The full-back is due a goal and would love to fire in one of his trademark free-kicks against a former club, having spent four years at Spurs.
Last Tottenham line-up: Lloris, Dier, Romero, Lenglet, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Perisic, Porro, Son, Kane, Kulusevski.
