Euro 2024 guide: All you need to know

Germany, the three-time winners, will host the 17th European Championship in 2024.

England will hope to go one better after losing the 2020 edition at Wembley on penalties, going into the tournament as the outright favourites, while Scotland are participating in this year’s Euros for the fourth time.

Wales hope to join them in Germany but must first navigate a play-off game against Poland.

Here we take a look at all you need to know in our Euro 2024 guide.

When does Euro 2024 start?

The tournament begins on Friday June 14, with hosts Germany facing Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

When is the Euro 2024 final?

The showpiece takes place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday July 14.

Who are the defending Euro 2024 champions?

Italy lifted the trophy for the second time following a penalty shoot-out victory over England at Wembley.

England’s long wait for major silverware continued after Gareth Southgate’s side saw their dreams end in heartbreaking fashion.

The nation was at a standstill for the Three Lions’ biggest match in 55 years and Luke Shaw’s early stunner at a rocking Wembley had fans dreaming that football would be coming home rather than going to Rome.

But Italy wrested control of the final and deservedly levelled through Leonardo Bonucci, with the match going to extra-time and on to spot-kicks after it ended 1-1.

Southgate failed with the key effort in the Euro ’96 semi-final loss to Germany and Wembley witnessed another gutting shoot-out loss in the country’s first European Championship final.

Jordan Pickford denied Andrea Belotti and Jorginho but Marcus Rashford hit the post before fellow substitutes Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were denied as Italy won the shoot-out 3-2.

What was the reaction to the Euro 2024 draw?

Gareth Southgate (England)

I’ve been fortunate as a coach and a player to have been to eight tournaments.

I’ve seen a lot of teams that were fancied and well ranked going into tournaments not deliver and not get out of their group.

So, we have to have the humility to start again, as well as we’ve been playing and as well as we’ve built over a long period of time.

We’ve been ranked in the top five in the world for five years, so we’ve had consistency of performances and results.

But a new tournament means a new challenge and the first objective is to get out of the group again.

Steve Clarke (Scotland)

The first thing for us to do is just to prepare properly.

Make sure we’re competitive, play as well as we can in the games and then after that we’ll count on the points and see if we’ve got enough.

I think what impressed me most about this group of players (in qualification) is that they want to be competitive every time they go out there.

We want to continue to improve – they feel as though they can improve a little bit more and hopefully between now and next summer, we do improve and we can be very competitive in Germany.

Rob Page (Wales)

When you dream of becoming a footballer as a kid, you want to play against top teams, you want to play against top players, and those teams that are drawn in that group certainly fall into the category.

They’re the best teams in Europe and well respected in world football and rightly so.

For us to get there will be a big achievement and to look forward to playing those teams is incredible for the players again.
