The Tokyo 2020 Olympics get under way on July 23 and we are assessing the Team GB odds heading into the Games.
The Olympics have been delayed by a year but are still due to take place amid a state of emergency caused by rising coronavirus rates in the Japanese capital.
We have already highlighted some of the best Great Britain medal hopes for Tokyo 2020 but how many medals will the team return with?
Team GB odds
Great Britain’s 376-strong Olympic squad is its biggest for an overseas Games and women will outnumber men in the team for the first time.
The team contains 122 returning Olympians and 51 medallists, with 254 debutants joining the party.
The spread for Team GB’s medal count is set at 44.5 in bwin’s Olympics betting odds and over that number can be backed at 6/5.
That looks well within the team’s capabilities if all goes to plan and seems a better bet than under 44.5 at 3/5.
UK Sport chief executive Sally Munday said the funding body was taking a more “holistic” approach to traditional medal targets, setting a broad range of between 45 and 70 for the Tokyo Games, partly due to the lack of available data from a locked-down sporting calendar.
The range suggests Great Britain will be expected to push or exceed the 51 medals won in Beijing in 2008, while offering an ambitious chance of matching the 67 attained in Rio in 2016.
Munday said: “Tokyo will be an extraordinary Games and for us measuring success has evolved since Rio.
“Medals, of course, are a big part of that. But if we are to deliver on our new mission to create the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments…we know we’ve got to broaden our horizons.
“And that’s why we are so excited not just about the medal potential of the team but also the opportunity presented by the Games to showcase once again why Olympic and Paralympic sport means so much to the British public.”
Rio return unlikely to be matched
Matching the 67 medals won in Rio five years ago seems like a stretch given the relative downturn in previously strong medal sports like cycling and gymnastics.
But there remain plenty of reasons for optimism, with swimmer Adam Peaty appearing almost unbeatable in the men’s 100 metre breaststroke.
Dina Asher-Smith stands a strong chance in the women’s 200 metres, world taekwondo champions Jade Jones, Bianca Walkden and Bradly Sinden start as favourites while sharpshooters Seonaid McIntosh and Matt Coward-Holley are also good bets.
Thirteen-year-old Sky Brown will become Britain’s youngest summer Olympian as she stars in skateboard’s debut at the Games.
Another new sport, sport-climbing, sees double World Cup season winner Shauna Coxsey among the leading hopefuls.
Inevitably, attention will turn to the Velodrome where golden couple Jason and Laura Kenny will be looking to continue to add to their already record-breaking medal hauls.
Predicting how many golds will be won looks harder to call in the Team GB odds for the Olympics, with 4/5 available for over 13.5 and evens for under.
The team returned with 27 in 2016 while home advantage in 2012 allowed them to win 29.
A haul of 19 in Beijing means over 13.5 still has plenty of appeal, especially given the 23 silver medals which Team GB also win in Rio.
