Most exciting NBA free agents in 2020

With the post-season having ended, we’re taking a look at which players are potentially the most exciting NBA free agents in 2020.

Fans will have to wait until January for their next taste of NBA action, but the off-season will be dominated by speculation about where the wealth of possible free agency signings will end up.

We’ve run the rule over the sport’s key stats and identified the five top-performing players in each category during the regular season who could be on the move.

Points per game

Starting with the most visible stat of all, one of the regular season’s 10 most prolific points scorers could be departing this year’s champions. The Lakers triumphed in October but may start next season without Anthony Davis, who has yet to exercise his option of staying in Los Angeles. Davis is also one of the five top performing free agents for rebounds, steals, blocks and minutes played per game, making him the most likely to grab the headlines when he makes his decision. Davis is 8/1 with bwin to be the 2020/21 regular season MVP!

Rebounds per game

Intriguingly, the player with the most rebounds per game in the regular season also has his future in his own hands. Two-time All-Star Andre Drummond is no stranger to the top of the rebound list and has been non-committal on his future so far. Another free agent who features in more than one of our top fives, he also ranks well for steals and blocks, so whoever can tempt him away from the Cavaliers will know what they’re getting.

Assists per game

While nobody could get near the imperious LeBron James’ 10.2 assists per game this season, there are plenty of creative players who are now unrestricted free agents. Of these, Fred VanVleet is attracting the most attention and would strengthen several teams if the Raptors can’t persuade him to stay in Toronto. In addition to his assists, VanVleet also makes the top five for steals and played more minutes per game than any other free agent last season.

Steals per game

We’ve already mentioned three of the top five free agents for steals per game, but not the top performer. Kris Dunn is unlikely to be staying with the Chicago Bulls after failing to attend their recent mini-camp, with the point guard rumoured to have attracted attention elsewhere. As a restricted free agent, his current team will have the opportunity to match any offer Dunn receives, but may prefer to invest in new players. Bwin are betting on who will be the first overall pick of the 2020 NBA draft.

Blocks per game

Another stat where the league leader from the regular season is now a free agent. Hassan Whiteside made just under three blocks per game for the Trail Blazers, including a franchise record-breaking 10 against the Bulls in November. He is a divisive figure among the Portland fanbase, but could still be one the most exciting NBA free agents in 2020.
