Mayakoba Golf Classic: Ancer to enjoy home comforts

It was a case of close but no cigar last week, as 20/1 headline tip Patrick Cantlay finished runner-up in Las Vegas, Phil Casey writes.

But the one good thing about the virtually endless golf season is that another opportunity is just around the corner and that’s what we have with this week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Designed by Greg Norman, El Camaleon Golf Club again hosts the event and boasts mangrove jungles, limestone canals and oceanfront stretches of sand, as well as a cenote – a massive underground cavern – in the middle of the first fairway.

And we’re hoping that home advantage pays off this week with Mexico’s Abraham Ancer, whose only poor performance on his last three starts was sadly when we tipped him in the CJ Cup in Korea.

Ancer rebounded from that display with a tie for fourth in Las Vegas and was ninth in this event last year, so deserves another chance at 33/1 in the each-way market as our main Mayakoba Golf Classic prediction.

At the same price, our next selection is something of a course specialist, Charles Howell having made the cut in eight of his nine appearances, with three top 10s and four more top 20s.

Howell’s scoring average in 34 rounds is an impressive 68.65 and he started his season with a tie for fifth in the CIMB Classic.

Next up for our Mayakoba Golf Classic betting tips is fellow American Patrick Rodgers, who held a share of the halfway lead 12 months ago before fading to a tie for 14th.

Rodgers was also 10th in 2015 and has started the new season in solid form with figures of 25-14-41. He can be backed each-way at 50/1.

And finally, JJ Spaun finished alongside Rodgers last year and has been 10th and 15th on his last two starts. Spaun is available at 66/1 in the each-way Mayakoba Golf Classic odds.
