Irish Open predictions: Meronk tipped to prove a point

The countdown is on until the Ryder Cup later this month but it is a former venue for that tournament which takes centre stage this week in our Irish Open predictions.

The K Club hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006 and the Arnold Palmer-designed North Course stages this week’s DP World Tour event for the first time since 2016.

Rory McIlroy is the clear favourite but makes little appeal at 10/3 so we’re looking for some alternatives at bigger prices in the Irish Open odds.

Adrian Meronk @ 28/1

Much of the debate around European captain Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup selections has been the omission of Meronk, who won the Italian Open in May at the venue for the biennial tournament and has enjoyed three victories in the last 15 months.

The Pole is also third in the Race to Dubai rankings, so has reason to feel aggrieved at missing out on the Ryder Cup – and with Donald also in the Irish Open field, Meronk has plenty of motivation to prove a point this week.

He finished tied for 13th at the European Masters last week so heads to Ireland in decent form and spurred on by his selection snub.

Matt Wallace @ 45/1

Wallace is another player who has missed out on Ryder Cup selection but he almost forced his way into the automatic picks after finishing runner-up at the Czech Masters last month.

He won his first PGA Tour title in March and his length and accuracy off the tee means he is well suited to The K Club, where taking advantage of the par fives is imperative.

Wallace’s temperament can let him down but with the pressure off in terms of the Ryder Cup, he is fancied to challenge as one of our Irish Open betting tips.

Joost Luiten @ 66/1

Luiten has not tasted victory since 2018 and is relying on a career earnings exemption this season but is on his way back after a superb year and is ninth in the Race to Dubai standings.

Last week’s tie for fifth at the European Masters was his seventh top-10 finish of the year and he went close to winning the BMW International Open in June, when he held a three-shot lead heading into the final round but had to settle for second.

He has played at The K Club before, unlike many in this week’s field, and can perform better than his odds suggest.
