OHL Classic: Europeans can shine in Mexico

The PGA Tour heads south from Las Vegas to Mexico for this week’s OHL Classic at Mayakoba, where the defending champion and a couple of Europeans can do well, Phil Casey writes.

Designed by Greg Norman, El Camaleon Golf Club again hosts the event and boasts mangrove jungles, limestone canals and oceanfront stretches of sand, as well as a cenote – a massive underground cavern – in the middle of the first fairway.

But perhaps the most notable fact about the course is that it uses Papsalum grass, which is only used at two other venues on the PGA Tour, namely Trump International Golf Club and Kuala Lumpur Country Club.

The latter recently hosted the CIMB Classic which was won in fine style by American Pat Perez, who won last year’s OHL Classic by two shots from Gary Woodland.

In three starts this season Perez has finished first, fifth and 24th and although odds of 12/1 fully reflect such form, he makes much more appeal than 9/1 favourite Rickie Fowler so gets the nod as the first of our OHL Classic betting predictions.

Our second selection’s form leaves a lot more to be desired, but Scotland’s Russell Knox has an enviable record at the venue having finished third behind Perez last year and second in 2015.

Knox, who lost out in a play-off with eventual winner Graeme McDowell and Jason Bohn, has done little since finishing fifth in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational back in August but clearly likes the course and is worth chancing at 50/1.

McDowell himself is in better form after a tie for 10th in Las Vegas and the former US Open champion is the third of our OHL Classic betting tips at odds of 40/1.

The Northern Irishman is always more at home on courses where length is not essential and El Camaleon fits the bill at just over 7,000 yards. Wind can also be a factor this week and McDowell can handle that better than most in the field.

Our final selection’s ability in the wind is more of an unknown, but with form figures of 3-54-2 this season, Sung Kang also makes the list at 66/1.
