Confederations Cup final: Chile to grind out narrow win

Kick Off: 1900, 02/07/2017

Stadium: Saint Petersburg Stadium

Chile were tipped for Confederations Cup success in our pre-tournament preview and we’re sticking with the South American side to see off Germany in Sunday’s final.

These two teams came through the semis in contrasting fashion but we reckon La Roja’s watertight defence can prove the decisive factor in Saint Petersburg.

For those who voted in our poll to predict the outright winner of this competition, Portugal were the most popular choice, with Germany second on 26.9 per cent and Chile third with 18.6 per cent.

Those opinions are reflected in Germany now being slight favourites to come out on top, but we still believe Chile are value at 11/10 to lift the trophy in our Confederations Cup final betting tips.

A Look At Chile’s Betting Odds

Chile have claimed outright glory in the last two Copa America tournaments by beating Argentina on penalties after goalless draws in each of those deciders.

That blueprint for success was again evident as La Roja and Portugal finished level at 0-0 after a hard-fought 120 minutes before Claudio Bravo saved three straight spot-kicks to see his side through.

“Despite the lack of goals, I thought it was a cracking match, with all the players on the pitch giving their all,” commented head coach Juan Antonio Pizzi.

“I thought we had more chances overall, like when we hit the woodwork twice at the very end, but neither team, nor any of the players, made any crucial mistakes.”

With Arturo Vidal excelling in the midfield engine room and Alexis Sanchez ever industrious up front, we like 31/4 for Chile to prevail 1-0 from the Confederations Cup final odds.

A Look At Germany’s Betting Odds

Germany have sent out an ominous warning ahead of next year’s World Cup by being able to compete at this level even without a number of established stars rested by Joachim Low.

The next wave of emerging talents have really caught the eye going forward, with Leon Goretzka scoring twice inside the first eight minutes to set the tone for a 4-1 demolition of Mexico in the semis.

Low’s fringe players have been less convincing at the back, though, and Chile really had them rattled for a while during a 1-1 draw in the pool stage, with Eduardo Vargas hitting the bar after Sanchez had opened the scoring.

Those high-pressing tactics will again test Germany’s desire to play out from the back and stifle their creative flair in midfield as well, so 5/1 for Sanchez to again break the deadlock completes our Confederations Cup final predictions.
