1st INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
The Colts have struggled to settle on a quarterback since being blessed with Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck but nabbing former Atlanta stalwart Matt Ryan looks a really good short-term fit to us.
Matty Ice has the perfect temperament to provide steady support in an offence built around outstanding running back Jonathan Taylor, especially as the O-line again looks rock-solid.
That is a combination which should result in consistent success against teams Indianapolis are supposed to beat.
Landing cornerback Stephen Gilmore on a two-year, $20million deal will bolster a reliable defence, led by three-time Pro Bowl pick Darius Leonard, and everything points towards this being a percentage pick in our AFC South predictions.
2nd TENNESSEE TITANS
Mike Vrabel was named NFL Coach of the Year after Tennessee made it back-to-back division titles with a 12-5 record, which earned them the top seed in the AFC.
Losing out to Cincinnati in the play-offs was a big disappointment, though, and then seeing star wide receiver AJ Brown depart just rubbed salt into the wounds.
Powerful running back Derrick Henry and experienced QB Ryan Tannehill are good enough to keep the Titans competitive, but injuries have left this team with some holes to fill and the feeling is this may be a consolidation campaign.
3rd JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Urban Meyer did not last long as Jacksonville followed up a disastrous 1-15 effort in 2020 with a frustrating 3-14 record last term, which was additionally blighted by off-field issues involving the head coach.
That left the Jaguars with the number one overall draft pick again and Georgia edge rusher Travon Walker should bolster things on the defensive side of the ball, along with Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd, who brings an exemplary attitude.
Former Philadelphia boss Doug Pederson seems a better fit to try and turn around this ailing franchise and 2020 top pick Trevor Lawrence should enjoy working with the 54-year-old, who was previously the quarterbacks coach under Andy Reid at the Eagles.
There can be no overnight fix in an organisation struggling as much as this one, but progress is anticipated – just not quickly enough to trouble the top two in this section.
4th HOUSTON TEXANS
Offloading talented QB Deshaun Watson to Cleveland will hurt Houston in the here and now but should benefit them in the long term, with a much-needed rebuilding programme boosted by additional draft picks.
General manager Nick Caserio and new head coach Lovie Smith appeared to do a solid job with this year’s rookie choices, starting with playmaking cornerback Derek Stingley from LSU.
Powerful guard Kenyon Green, feisty safety Jalen Pitre and wide receiver John Metchie may all make an immediate impact, but it will surely take more than one influx of fresh reinforcements to put the Texans back on track.
