Here, we’re providing our AFC East predictions and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each team:
1st BUFFALO BILLS
Sean McDermott’s side made it back-to-back divisional titles with an 11-6 record last term, before losing out to Kansas City Chiefs in the play-offs for a second straight season.
With 26-year-old quarterback Josh Allen growing in stature each year and a strong offence further boosted by a second-round pick for speedy running back James Cook, Buffalo should again be able to pile up the points this term and are rated the team to beat in our AFC East betting tips.
On the defensive side, the Bills drafted the cornerback they needed in first-rounder Kaiir Elam and will be hoping a six-year, $120million deal to land linebacker Von Miller takes them to the next level.
Miller helped push the Rams to Super Bowl glory after arriving in mid-season last year and has the winning mentality to inspire those around him to greater heights, so everything is in place for Buffalo to chase a first Vince Lombardi Trophy and they are 7.0 favourites for that.
2nd MIAMI DOLPHINS
Tua Tagovailoa will have no excuses not to mount a challenge for top honours this term after Miami embarked on a strong recruitment drive via trades and free agency, putting the emphasis on winning now ahead of developing for the future.
Former Kansas City flyer Tyreek Hill will provide the deep threat sorely needed and if new offensive tackle Terron Armstead can stay healthy, his $75m five-year contract will be money well spent.
Handing edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah a big-money extension looks solid business and linebacker Melvin Ingram could bring more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, while several other rising stars should continue to develop on an already efficient defence.
Incoming head coach Mike McDaniel has earned this first crack at a top job by working his way up the offensive ranks at six other NFL teams and he does appear to be taking over the Dolphins at just the right time.
3rd NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Bill Belichick got the Patriots back on track with a 10-6 record in 2021, which featured a seven-game hot streak from late October to early December, but their limitations were exposed when faltering late on.
New England went down to Buffalo and Miami when losing three of their final four matches and were then blown away 47-17 by the Bills in the Wild Card round.
Second-season QB Mac Jones is open to improvement but losing offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to Las Vegas was a big blow and there have also been some worrying departures on defence, including highly-rated cornerback JC Jackson.
4th NEW YORK JETS
Robert Saleh helped the Jets to double their win tally in his first season as head coach, but that only meant a jump up to four victories, so much more improvement is required before an 11-year absence from the play-offs can be ended.
The good news for their long-suffering fans is that a defence ranked last in 2021 was given some much-needed help in the draft via flashy cornerback Sauce Gardner and powerful edge rusher Jermaine Johnson.
Wide receiver Garrett Wilson completed a trio of first-round picks and the Jets traded up to get running back Breece Hall early in the second, so signal caller Zach Wilson is better placed to show his true worth, but it may just take more time for everything to click.
