Incoming head coach Robert Saleh seemed non-committal after his appointment, so pursuing Watson may be a great fit for all parties. The Jets get their best playmaker since Joe Namath, Houston has the second pick in the draft and Watson has a chance to light up the Big Apple.

The Dolphins took a punt on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in last year’s draft, despite injury concerns coming out of college. The 22-year-old former Alabama stand-out returned to full fitness and featured in 10 games during his rookie campaign, starting all but one. Opinions were divided on how well he did, though, and the Dolphins do still have the draft capital to pursue Watson if deciding to go in a different direction. The arrival of Charlie Frye as Miami’s new QB coach may be a telling move, as he has links with Tagovailoa from his high school days.

Mitch Trubisky enjoyed a stirring resurgence after his fifth-year option was declined but neither he nor Super Bowl winner Nick Foles look ideal long-term options for Chicago. The Bears have shown a willingness to roll the dice when chasing an elite-level target before, giving up a couple of first-round draft picks to land Khalil Mack from the Raiders – and the linebacker has delivered.

Bill Belichick will be looking on longingly at Tom Brady when he leads out Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl, reflecting on what might have been if he had stayed with the Patriots. Cam Newton couldn’t fill the void, so will New England mortgage the house to bring in a can’t-miss successor to the GOAT? Some will see this as a lively longshot in the Deshaun Watson trade odds.

The Broncos have a young offense which could be moulded to suit Watson’s strengths, plus salary-cap flexibility, so that’s two important boxes ticked. John Elway reaped the rewards of a bold move to bring in Payton Manning just under 10 years ago and will be wondering if Watson could have the same impact.

Alex Smith’s return from life-threatening injury problems was a great story but at 37 he can only be a short-term fairytale. Taylor Heinicke came from nowhere to shine in the play-offs, while Kyle Allen is still on the books, but they don’t inspire confidence either. It would be a shame if Washington wasted a Super Bowl-standard defense by not addressing this situation, hence the Deshaun Watson trade rumours.
