However, the Sens put in a gutsy display to fight back from behind on three occasions and even held the lead twice in the final period before unfortunately fading late on.
Zach Sanford was the star of the show with a hat-trick, with the 27-year-old grabbing a goal in each period with clinical efficiency.
He declared: “We had that intensity and kept coming back but we have to mature a little bit and learn how to close those games out.”
Those eight days off may just have helped freshen up Ottawa, though, as well creating a bond between the players.
