Toronto Maple Leafs vs Edmonton Oilers predictions

Face-off: 1900 ET, 05/01/2022

Venue: Scotiabank Arena

Toronto have consistently impressed since getting off to a shaky start this season and are eyeing a fourth straight win when hosting Edmonton.

The Maple Leafs enjoyed a 5-1 road win over the Oilers prior to an extended Christmas break and are hard to oppose when renewing the rivalry on home ice.

We can’t see past Toronto to prevail by more than 1.5 goals again at 2.1 in our NHL predictions.

Toronto Maple Leafs Odds

Toronto improved to 13-4-1 at Scotiabank Arena this term when romping to a 6-0 rout of Ottawa on New Year’s Day.

Ilya Mikheyev and William Nylander both bagged a brace of goals, while Jack Campbell claimed his fourth shutout of the season with 23 saves.

“It was an impressive game from the boys in front of me,” said Campbell on the NHL website.

“They were playing super fast and doing everything that our coaches had talked about. It was a fun time out there and great to be back.”

The Maple Leafs have been cut to 10.0 fourth favourites for Stanley Cup glory and also have the likes of Morgan Rielly and John Tavares in terrific form, even if Auston Mathews is out due to Covid.

Looking at the NHL odds for this game, Toronto to win by exactly three goals takes the eye at 4.75.

Edmonton Oilers Odds

Edmonton’s key centre Connor McDavid, who has a league-high 33 points, is a Covid doubt alongside forward Derek Ryan.

The Oilers were already under a cloud after failing to win any of their four fixtures since play resumed.

Two of those contests did go to overtime but Monday’s 4-1 loss away to the New York Rangers was a comprehensive defeat.

Head coach Dave Tippett said: “I thought we did a lot of things well, but our goaltender wasn’t very good and we didn’t fire enough pucks at the net to get us back in the game.”

Edmonton are too good a team to stay down for long but bouncing back to form on the final leg of a five-match road trip will be hard.

The visitors have conceded a high number of goals in the first period this season, standing sixth on that list, whereas Toronto are usually tight early on.

Let’s finish off our Toronto Maple Leafs vs Edmonton Oilers predictions by backing the hosts to lead after the opening stanza at 2.15.
