Newcastle claimed the last of their six FA Cup triumphs way back in 1955 and Eddie Howe would no doubt love to end that drought this term.

The Magpies start out by visiting Sheffield Wednesday in round three but may find this a tricky test against the in-form League One outfit.

We feel 12/5 for United to prevail by just a one-goal margin makes sense for our first Sheff Wed vs Newcastle prediction.

Sheffield Wednesday Odds

Wednesday are going along well in second place in their own division after winning their last three matches.

Josh Windass hit a hat-trick in Monday’s 5-0 rout of Cambridge at this venue, extending the Owls’ unbeaten run in all competitions to 17.

Head coach Darren Moore said: “It’s been a wonderful day for us and we just keep our focus on ourselves.

“Even though it’s nice that we’re in second position, we’ve just got to keep our momentum and focus on the next game.”

On Windass, Moore added: “He’s come back and showed the class talent he is. I thought he took his chances really, really well.”

Wednesday’s only setback since early October was going out of the EFL Cup to Southampton, when Windass earned them a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s before losing a penalty shoot-out.

They have netted a division-high 30 goals from 13 home games in League One and look set to enjoy some positive moments in this tie.

Looking at the 21/10 for an away win and both teams to score takes the eye.

Newcastle United Odds

After years of frustration under the previous regime, Newcastle have come good in great style since being bought by mega-rich Saudi backers.

Last January’s spending spree has paid dividend, with the Magpies third in the Premier League and dreaming of Champions League football.

Tuesday’s goalless stalemate at Arsenal made it 15 games without defeat and they have only suffered one loss all season, going down 2-1 in stoppage time at Liverpool.

Defender Dan Burn felt the game against the Gunners, which included nine yellow cards and some heated moments on the touchline, demonstrated United’s growing resolve.

“A couple of years back, we probably would have got absolutely battered there but I think it shows the group of lads we’ve got and the resilience within the team,” Burn told NUFC TV.

“That’s a big thing about the team, we won’t get pushed over easy. We’re a good group of lads and we stick with each other and give as good as we get.”

Newcastle have kept six consecutive clean sheets, including home EFL Cup ties with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

Overall, though, they do tend to concede the odd goal on the road, so 7/1 for a 2-1 away win completes our Sheff Wed vs Newcastle betting tips.
