Kick-off: 1755, 19/09/2019
Stadium: Philips Stadion
TV: BT Sport
PSV look well equipped to enjoy a long run in the Europa League and we expect them to be too strong for Sporting at Philips Stadion in this Group D opener.
The visitors do not quite look the force of old at the moment and may have to battle it out for second place in this pool with LASK and Rosenborg.
We’re snapping up 87/100 for a home win with our initial PSV vs Sporting prediction.
A Look At PSV Eindhoven’s Betting Odds
PSV found life tough in a very hard Champions League section last season, but only took one serious beating at Barcelona and picked up a couple of draws versus Tottenham and Inter.
Having pushed Ajax all the way when second in the Dutch Eredivisie, they had another crack at qualifying for Europe’s elite club competition again, but lost out on away goals to Basel.
They did beat the Swiss side 3-2 at this venue, though, and also impressed here in a Europa League play-off when crushing Apollon Limassol 3-0, before an even better 4-0 romp in Cyprus.
Things have been going well on the domestic front, too, with Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing of Vitesse Arnhem being a fourth straight league win, putting them joint-top of the table with Ajax.
Young striker Donyell Malen incredibly bagged all of those goals, including two late penalties, and scored for Holland in a 4-2 Euro 2020 win in Germany earlier this month.
Steven Bergwijn is another rising star, while fellow winger Bruma will be keen to make an impression against his former club.
Looking at the PSV vs Sporting odds, we like 31/20 for a home win and over 2.5 goals in the game,
A Look At Sporting Lisbon’s Betting Odds
Sporting did reasonably well in this competition last term, securing 13 points in their group to finish second behind Arsenal, before losing narrowly to Villarreal in the first knockout round.
The Lisbon outfit are back at this level again thanks to beating Porto on penalties in the Portuguese Cup final, so they are no mugs.
However, they could only manage a distant third in their domestic title race and this season has not started out too brightly either.
A 5-0 Portuguese Super Cup drubbing by Benfica had alarm bells ringing and, after a brief rally, picking up just one point from their last two league games was disappointing.
Marcel Keizer was dismissed during the international break following a 3-2 home loss to Rio Ave and Leonel Pontes began his reign with a 1-1 draw at Boavista.
Keeping hold of captain Bruno Fernandes over the summer was a boost, along with landing Yannick Bolasie on loan from Everton, but losing leading scorer Bas Dost to Eintracht Frankfurt has hurt.
The visitors still have enough attacking talent to bag a consolation goal, but 7/2 for the hosts to prevail 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 completes our PSV vs Sporting betting tips.
PSV 5-0 Vitesse Arnhem – Malen (5)
Boavista 1-1 SPORTING – Fernandes
