Derby vs Man Utd: Red Devils can keep Rooney quiet

Kick-off: 1945, 05/03/2020

Stadium: Pride Park

TV: BT Sport

All eyes will be on Wayne Rooney when Derby take on his former club Manchester United in an intriguing FA Cup fifth-round tie at Pride Park.

The Red Devils’ record goalscorer has done well for the Rams since joining from DC United in January and is sure to have a big say in this contest.

Rooney spent over 12 years at United, making 559 appearances and scoring 253 goals, while winning a dozen major honours.

However, he is set to face a formidable opponent in Sergio Romero on this occasion, with the Argentina keeper having let in just one goal in his last eight matches.

Romero should again get the nod in this competition, especially after David De Gea’s howler at Everton, so 33/20 for an away win to nil is our opening Derby vs Man Utd prediction.

A Look At Derby County’s Betting Odds

Derby enjoyed a welcome confidence boost when winning 3-1 at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday.

Tom Lawrence hit a double and Jason Knight also netted in an early blitz by the Rams at Hillsborough.

“We played well from the back and they couldn’t press us,” said Phillip Cocu. “We kept control of the game and it was a deserved win.

“We found a good combination and balance in playing good football, dominating the game and being effective.

“When you go in at half-time with a 3-0 lead, it gives the team great confidence that we needed.”

In this competition, they won 1-0 at Crystal Palace before beating Northampton 4-2 in a replay here, leading at half-time in both games.

The Rams can also take heart from last season’s EFL Cup upset at Old Trafford, when beating United on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

However, we can’t get away from the fact that they are only 13th in the Championship and have generally struggled for goals against the better teams in that division.

Looking at the 13/10 for County to draw a blank up front.

A Look At Manchester United’s Betting Odds

United will have been pretty pleased to leave Everton with a 1-1 Premier League draw after De Gea’s blunder gifted the Toffees an early lead.

Bruno Fernandes further enhanced his growing reputation with a long-range leveller and the Red Devils received some help from a last-gasp VAR ruling to hang on for a point.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are now unbeaten in eight games in all competitions, with 19 goals scored during that period and only two conceded.

“We stuck together as a team,” said the manager. “Some days you don’t play with the ball fantastically, but I think we stuck together and grinded out a point.”

United will make some changes ahead of next weekend’s crucial league clash with neighbours City, but bringing in Romero will hardly make them more vulnerable at the back.

He has kept clean sheets in nine of 12 Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup appearances this season.

That includes two encounters with Wolves in this tournament, so we’re adding 16/5 for an away win and under 2.5 goals to our Derby vs Man Utd betting tips.
