Eduardo Vargas grabbed his second goal in three games as Uruguay were held to a 1-1 stalemate, which guaranteed their progress.
However, Martin Lasarte suffered his first defeat in seven games as head coach when Paraguay enjoyed a pretty comfortable 2-0 triumph in Brasilia.
Chile fans will hope that was just a blip when nothing significant was at stake but now facing Brazil at this stage is a heavy price to pay.
Claudio Bravo, Mauricio Isla, Gary Medel, Arturo Vidal, Vargas and Alexis Sanchez are not quite the players they were in the past.
