The England Euro 2024 squad announcement has dropped, with several surprising names included in (and excluded from) the initial long list ahead of this summer’s tournament.
Unlike France, who announced their final 26-man squad last week, Gareth Southgate has deciding to call up several more names that he’s allowed to bring to Germany this summer, opting for an initial 33-man list that will be whittled down to 26 before the tournament kicks off on June 14.
Despite picking 33 names, regulars Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Ben Chilwell have been omitted, with Southgate choosing to go for young players who are in form, rather than experienced members of the squad who may not be playing their best football right now.
The likes of Adam Wharton, Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah have all been included, despite not being capped. They’ll have the chance to represent their country for the first time in the two warm-up friendlies England are due to play next month, even if they aren’t picked in the final Euro 2024 squad.
Luke Shaw is included, despite being out with an injury right now. With Chilwell missing, it’s Levi Colwill who is expected to be an option on the left-side of defence, with Jarrad Brandwaite in the squad for the second time, despite not featuring in either of the two games he was avaliable for during the most recent international break in March.
Some fans will be surprised with the omission of both Rashford and Henderson, who despite not being in the best form right now, have been trusted members of Southgate’s side for several years. As for Rashford, there’s simply too much quality in the wide oppositions for the Three Lions for him to be included, with Anthony Gordon, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka will arguably having the best seasons of their respective careers.
The exclusion of Henderson is questionable considering England’s lack of depth in the midfield position, but Southgate seems willing to give youth a chance here, picking Wharton and Jones, as well as re-selecting Koibbe Mainoo, who played two games for England during the March international break after breaking out for Man United this season.
Below is the complete 33-man squad that England have announced ahead of the Euro 2024 training camp, but the list will be whittled down to just 26 before the tournament kicks off next month, with some of the following names to be cut.

England are currently the favourites for Euro 2024 glory, with odds of 11/4. They’re the front-runners to win the tournament for the first time, ahead of the likes of France (7/2), tournament hosts Germany (5/1) and Spain (8/1)
