Everton were being touted as dark horses for a top-six finish in the Premier League a couple of months ago, but have been dogged by inconsistency since.
Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Southampton was their fifth defeat in seven games in that division, with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s stoppage-time strike little more than a consolation.
An expensively-assembled squad is not yet realising its expected potential and Silva admitted: “Southampton totally deserved the win.
“They were more aggressive than us. They were faster than us in some moments also. This is something for us to learn for these type of games and how to approach them.”
The Toffees did romp to a 5-1 triumph at Burnley on Boxing Day, so there is always the chance that they will turn it on and prove a class apart here.
However, only edging out Lincoln 2-1 in the last round highlights how players can struggle to maintain such intensity against lower-ranked teams.
