Woodbine racing tips: Queen’s Plate preview

The Queen’s Plate is the highlight of the Canadian thoroughbred calendar and we’re looking at the key players in Sunday’s feature event in our Woodbine racing tips.

Bwin allows punters to bet on races from all around the world, with prices offered on each day’s action and future markets for top contests.

MOIRA did us a favour when winning last month’s Woodbine Oaks in spectacular fashion and we’re happy to stick with Kevin Attard’s exciting filly.

The Ontario-bred bay made it three victories from four outings at this course when powering home an incredible 10 lengths clear in that $500,000 Classic.

The stakes get even higher here, with $1million up for grabs, but Attard is hopeful of getting the better of Canada’s top colts over a slightly longer trip.

He said: “Typically, when you win the Oaks, depending on how impressive they are doing it, you always have to think of the Queen’s Plate.

“It is something we have always had in the back of our minds and we geared her campaign so the Plate would be her third race of the season and
she’d be fresh.”

Attard added: “I don’t see the distance being a problem for her. I think she has a great running style for this type of race. She is very tactical.

“We are getting five pounds less than the boys and she’s bred to handle the distance and runs like she can handle the distance.”

Fillies landed this prize in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2018, so Moira is fancied to strike another blow for the fairer sex.

RONDURE was edged out by THE MINKSTER in the Queenston Stakes but has since impressed when winning the Grade 3 Marine Stakes and can turn the tables on that rival for the forecast.

“He’s not overly large in stature but he’s stout,” said handler Katerina Vassilieva. “He has a stout, muscular body and a big heart.”

French jockey Flavien Prat, who won the 2019 Queen’s Plate with One Bad Boy, takes the ride and they will attract plenty of support.

Syndicate-owned DUKE OF LOVE caught the eye coming home strongly after trouble in running when fourth in the Plate Trial.

“It might have been the best race he’s run,” said MyRacehorse representative Harry Rice. “He really showed his determination when he stopped hard and then went around everybody and finished up nicely.

“Our owners are more than excited. He has a huge following. Every time we post something on him, people are paying attention and looking forward to whatever update we provide.”

MRH have over 5,000 members and famously won the 2020 Kentucky Derby with Authentic.

Handler Josie Carroll became the first female trainer to win the Queen’s Plate with Edenwold in 2006 and also struck with Inglorious in 2011, so she knows what is required to get the job done here.

CAUSIN’ MAYHEM, a well-named son of leading sire Into Mischief, was having only his third race when third in the same Plate Trial, so could have scope for improvement.
