Seattle Kraken vs Calgary Flames predictions

Face-off: 2200 ET, 30/12/2021

Venue: Climate Pledge Arena

Calgary had a tough little spell before the Christmas break but will be hoping to get back on track when returning to action at Seattle.

The Flames are still well placed to challenge for top honours in the Pacific Division and have cleared up their Covid problems during the lay-off.

An away record of 11-4-2 makes them worth backing to win in regular time on the road again at 2.05 in our NHL predictions.

Seattle Kraken Odds

Seattle let us down for a near-5.0 treble in our Wednesday NHL picks when edged out 3-2 in overtime by Philadelphia on home ice.

The Kraken enjoyed plenty of possession but clear-cut chances were few and far between in a tight tussle.

Although outshooting their opponents 36-22, head coach Dave Hakstol admitted: “We didn’t get inside enough in the first half of the game. That’s an area we need to improve.”

Seattle’s inaugural campaign has predictably been a steep learning curve and they are bottom of the Pacific table with a 10-17-4 record, 12 points behind Calgary after playing three times more.

This will be an emotional match for 38-year-old captain Mark Giordano, who previously spent 15 seasons with Calgary, the last eight as skipper.

However, the Kraken have three influential figures absent due to Covid in Vince Dunn, Ryan Donato and Mason Appleton.

Looking at the 3.7 for the Flames to win and both teams to score at least twice.

Calgary Flames Odds

The pre-Christmas postponement of all NHL action couldn’t come soon enough for Calgary, who went four games without a win before play was halted.

Prior to that blip, the Flames had won seven out of eight to send them racing up the table, with an average of four goals per game scored in those victories.

There is bound to be a bit of rustiness at Climate Pledge Arena but Darryl Sutter has been pleased with what he has seen in practice.

The head coach said: “The big thing is that we are probably healthier than we have been any time since the last exhibition game, quite honest.

“I think we just need to reinforce the details part of our game. It’s not like it disappeared or they forgot about it, it’s engraved in them.”

We reckon Calgary will look to start strongly and then try to hold on if the fatigue factor sets in during the latter stages.

The Flames have an excellent 30-15 aggregate advantage in the first period, whereas only one team has conceded more times than Seattle in the opening stanza.

Let’s add 18.0 for a 4-2 away win overall catches the eye.
