Face-off: 2230 ET, 02/12/2021
Venue: Staples Center
Los Angeles and Calgary both went into overtime last time out and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see an extra period required at Staples Center.
No team has had more draws in regular time than the Flames this season with five, while the Kings are just one behind them in stalemates.
We reckon 4.0 for the scores to be level after 60 minutes here is a value pick for our Los Angeles Kings vs Calgary Flames predictions.
Los Angeles Kings Odds
Los Angeles are sixth in the Western Pacific division on 22 points after being edged out 5-4 by Anaheim at this venue.
The Kings staged a gutsy comeback from 4-1 down in the third period but fell to a Kevin Shattenkirk strike in overtime.
LA are now 1-3-3 in their last seven games but coach Todd McLellan is refusing to press any panic buttons.
He said: “Our quality or level of play hasn’t fallen off dramatically, but we haven’t got the results.
“Timely goals, timely defensive plays – you’ve got to find a way to get past close and that’s where we are right now.”
On the plus side, Alex Iafallo scored two goals, while defenseman Drew Doughty had an assist and played 27:55 minutes after 16 matches out with a knee injury.
Los Angeles are near the bottom of the stats table for both goals scored and conceded in the first period this term at 11-12.
Looking at the 1.7 for under 1.5 total goals in the opening stanza a percentage bet.
Calgary Flames Odds
Calgary are nine points and four places above the Kings ahead of this divisional clash, having played just one game more.
The Flames improved to 6-1-1 in their past eight outings when shading Pittsburgh 2-1 in a shootout at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.
That was probably a fair result after Johnny Gaudreau almost clinched victory in overtime when hitting the crossbar.
Tristan Jarry impressed yet again for the Penguins and made a great save from Gaudreau to force the shootout, but was eventually beaten by Mikael Backlund in the seventh round.
Calgary coach Darryl Sutter is set for an emotional return to Los Angeles, having led the Kings to Stanley Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2014.
“I think it will be fun for him because he obviously has some great memories in LA,” said Milan Lucic, another former Kings alumni.
“I think he’s looking forward to it and I think it will mean a lot to him, but when he gets into game-day mode, he’s in game-day mode. He’s going to definitely be fired up for that.”
In what promises to be a tight tussle, let’s go with 1.8 for the first goal to be scored from 9:00 minutes onwards in our NHL predictions.
LOS ANGELES 4-5 Anaheim (OT)
CALGARY 2-1 Pittsburgh (OT)
Head-to-head: Los Angeles 5-3 Calgary, Calgary 4-3 Los Angeles, Los Angeles 4-1 Calgary, Calgary 3-4 Los Angeles
