Chelsea head to France under pressure to get their first win on the board in this season’s Champions League following a disappointing defeat to Valencia in their Stamford Bridge opener.
Lille are expected to be the whipping boys of the group and while the other three teams are all odds-on to qualify for the knockout stage, Lille are out to 5/1 to go through after losing 3-0 at Ajax.
An open match is expected as both teams look to bounce back with a win, so over 3.5 goals at 21/10 is our first Lille vs Chelsea prediction.
A Look At Lille’s Betting Odds
Lille were tipped to be the weakest team in Group H and an emphatic defeat in Amsterdam backed up that view, but the game was not as one-sided as the result suggested.
The expected goals data suggested Lille actually created the better chances, but were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal.
Last season’s semi-finalists Ajax took an early lead thanks to a Quincy Promes header, before second-half goals from Edson Alvarez and Nicolas Tagliafico put the result beyond doubt.
Lille are not expected to be pushovers on home soil, though, especially having won their opening four games at this venue in Ligue 1, scoring nine goals in the process.
They have several players with Premier League experience in the squad, with Jose Fonte marshalling the defence and former Bayern Munich youngster Renato Sanches looking to get his career back on track after flopping on loan at Swansea.
Striker Loic Remy will hope to get a chance to shine against his former club and Lille have plenty of attacking options, despite losing several key players over the summer, including Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal.
Let’s add both teams to score in the first half to our Lille vs Chelsea betting tips at 16/5.
A Look At Chelsea’s Betting Odds
Frank Lampard suffered defeat on his Champions League debut as a manager but Chelsea would have rescued a point if Ross Barkley had not fluffed a late penalty.
The Blues, trailing to a goal from Valencia winger Rodrigo, were given a lifeline in the closing stages when VAR flagged up a handball in the area, but Barkley’s spot-kick clipped the crossbar and his side went down 1-0.
Chelsea now have two successive away games in the competition and will surely need to win at least one of them to stay in the race for a last-16 place.
“The reality of losing the first game at home makes the rest of the games more important, particularly when they come next back-to-back away from home,” said Lampard.
“We need to have a strong focus on getting a result in one of those games now. It’s still a group where I think teams will take points off each other, because all the teams are strong.”
Chelsea have scored eight goals in their last two away games at Norwich and Wolves so certainly have the quality to get the result they need and the Blues to win 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 looks good value in the Lille vs Chelsea odds at 4/1.
Last Champions League result:
Ajax 3-0 LILLE
CHELSEA 0-1 Valencia
