Bayern Munich star ruled out of Euro 2024 with tonsillitis

Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic was set to star for Germany at this summer’s European Championship, with many seeing the talented prospect as a potential option to start alongside Toni Kroos.

However, with Germany’s opening group game against Scotland taking place on June 14, Pavlovic has been ruled out of the tournament and removed from the squad after coming down with a case of tonsillitis.

While not a serious injury by any means, Pavlovic would be unable to train for the next few days, and while some hoped he’d be back for the second group stage, Julian Nagelsmann has made the decision to not take any risks and instead replace him with Emre Can, who was a surprise omission from Germany’s initial squad that was announced.

It’s a blow for Pavlovic, with the highly-rated prospect being tipped for a big tournament with his nation, who are currently the third-favourites to win Euro 2024 on home soil, with odds of 11/2.

Germany are still stacked in the midfield though, particularly in the attacking portion, with Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Leroy Sane all expected to start just behind Kai Havertz.

The Arsenal man was trialled as a left wing-back during the March international break, but after a very solid end to the Premier League season with his club, the decision has been made to have Havertz start as the number nine.

Germany Euro 2024 odds

England are the favourites to win Euro 2024, with odds of 7/2. Germany aren’t far behind though, as third-favourites, with odds of 11/2. The Germans are just behind France, the second-favourites, who have been priced at 4/1. Wirtz, Sane and co are ahead of both Spain (7/1) and Portugal (13/2) for what it’s worth though.

While they are third-favourites, many feel that Germany’s sheer attacking talent, the ability of their established manager, and the fact the tournament is being played on home soil, gives them a very solid chance at going all the way and being crowned Champions on July 14.
