Tottenham’s Champion League trip to Inter Milan will evoke fond memories of some thrilling clashes between these clubs a few years ago.
Spurs lost 4-3 at the San Siro in October 2010, despite a Gareth Bale hat-trick, and went down 4-1 at this venue in March 2013.
However, they were convincing victors in both reverse fixtures and now look better equipped to hold their own in Italy as well.
We’re backing Mauricio Pochettino’s men to pick up a draw in this Group B opener and 23/10 for that outcome is our first Inter Milan vs Tottenham prediction.
A Look At Inter Milan’s Betting Odds
Inter were crowned champions of Europe for the third time when Jose Mourinho led them to a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the 2010 final.
However, the Nerazzurri had not qualified for this competition for the past six seasons prior to snatching fourth place in Serie A last term in dramatic circumstances.
They leapfrogged Lazio thanks to a superior head-to-head record following a 3-2 away win against that team in the closing round of fixtures.
Stefan de Vrij, Radja Nainggolan and Sime Vrsaljko have since been added to a squad which already included Ivan Perisic and Mauro Icardi.
We still don’t think there is enough star quality in this team to strike fear into the hearts of major clubs, though.
That view is backed up by a poor start to their domestic campaign, with Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Parma leaving Inter with just four points from as many matches.
A Look At Tottenham Hotspur’s Betting Odds
Tottenham were outstanding during last season’s group stage, with the only points dropped from six games being in a 1-1 draw at Real Madrid.
Spurs went on to draw 2-2 at Juventus in the opening leg of their last-16 tie, only to lose out 2-1 at Wembley in the return match.
Pochettino has assembled a settled squad, with the likes of Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Dele Alli, Kieran Tripper, Christian Eriksen and several others boosted by strong showings at the World Cup.
However, Spurs go into this game under a bit of a cloud, losing to Watford and Liverpool in their last couple of Premier League fixtures since a superb 3-0 win at Manchester United.
Tottenham will still be missing Lloris and Alli with thigh and hamstring injuries respectively.
Moussa Sissoko is also battling a knee problem and will miss out in Milan, while Kieran Tripper and Toby Alderweireld have been left out for “technical reasons”.
Pochettino has defended Kane’s lacklustre form, stating: “I am happy with all the players. We need to give time to the players to get their best and of course to show our potential.”
Steadying the ship may now be the target in Italy, though, and 23/4 for a 1-1 stalemate completes our Inter Milan vs Tottenham betting tips.
INTER MILAN 0-1 Parma
TOTTENHAM 1-2 Liverpool – Erik Lamela
Head-to-head: Inter 4-1 Tottenham, Tottenham 3-0 Inter, Tottenham 3-1 Inter, Inter 4-3 Tottenham
