Standard Liege vs Arsenal: Gunners can grow in confidence

Kick-off: 1755, 12/12/2019

Stadium: Stade Maurice Dufrasne

TV: BT Sport

Freddie Ljungberg enjoyed his first win in charge of Arsenal at West Ham on Monday and will be keen to build more momentum when visiting Standard Liege.

The Gunners only need to avoid a heavy defeat to advance from Europa League Group F but are fancied to claim another morale-boosting victory in Belgium.

We’re snapping up Evens for an away win as our initial Standard Liege vs Arsenal prediction.

A Look At Standard Liege’s Betting Odds

Standard go into this game three points adrift of pool leaders Arsenal and two behind Eintracht Frankfurt, who host basement dwellers Vitoria Guimaraes.

Head coach Michel Preud’homme admitted on the UEFA website: “There is not a lot of hope.

“Frankfurt only need a home win, even against a Guimaraes side who promised me they will do their utmost.

“There are teams that could go through with six, seven, eight points – we might get 10 without advancing; it’s a shame but that’s how it is.”

Standard started off brightly by beating Vitoria 2-0 at this venue, but then had their limitations exposed when crushed 4-0 by Arsenal in London.

Swapping 2-1 wins with Eintracht Frankfurt was a fair effort, but only drawing 1-1 in Guimaraes last month wasn’t quite good enough to put pressure on the big two.

The hosts have scored in all 12 home games this term, but we rate the Gunners as a class apart, even if they do make some changes.

Looking at the Standard Liege vs Arsenal odds, there is plenty of appeal in 9/4 for an away win and both teams to score.

A Look At Arsenal’s Betting Odds

Arsenal got off to a flyer in this group when winning 3-0 in Frankfurt and then outclassing Standard at Emirates Stadium under Unai Emery.

However, cracks began to appear in the Spaniard’s reign when it needed two late free-kicks from Nicolas Pepe to edge out Vitoria 3-2 in London.

The Gunners then went on a run of nine games without a win in all competitions, during which time Emery was shown the door.

A 1-1 draw in Guimaraes kept things ticking along in this tournament, but losing 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt proved the final straw.

Caretaker boss Ljungberg failed to make an immediate impact, as Arsenal picked up only one point from Premier League matches against Norwich and Brighton.

However, Monday’s come-from-behind 3-1 win at West Ham was much more like it and gave the Gunners something to build on.

“First half we were slow, a bit lethargic and didn’t move or run, but that comes when players are low and have no confidence, because you don’t do the things you need to,” Ljungberg said.

“It has been hard, but I felt ‘give it a go second half’ and it was amazing for me to see.

“You saw West Ham get a bit tired and low around the 60th minute and we sliced them open and played some really good football.”

This is another chance to build confidence before facing Manchester City on Sunday and 33/4 for a 2-1 away win is added to our Standard Liege vs Arsenal betting tips.
