Grand National 2023 tips: Three fancies for Aintree glory

We’ve picked out three 2023 Grand National tips for punters to consider ahead of this year’s Liverpool spectacular.

The world’s most famous race attracts over 500 million viewers in more than 140 countries and features 30 fences across just under four and a half miles.

Delta Work @ 9/1

Gordon Elliott knows what it takes to land this prize, having followed up a 2007 success with Silver Birch by saddling Tiger Roll to back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2019.

Delta Work denied Tiger Roll the fairytale ending to his career in the cross-country chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival before finishing third in the Grand National.

The 10-year-old successfully defended his crown at Cheltenham last month and Elliott is confident he will be in the thick of the action again on his return to Aintree.

“If I had to pick a horse to ride this year, it would be Delta Work,” said the trainer, who has six entries. “He got a little bit far back early last year, but ran a very good race. He was a bit careful, but he is in great form now and we couldn’t be happier with him.”

Any Second Now @ 12/1

Irish trainers have taken top honours for the past four renewals and again dominate the head of the betting outside of Scottish raider Corach Rambler, with this 11-year-old one of the major players.

Recent victors have been younger, but Neptune Collonges, Auroras Encore and Pineau De Re all struck at this age between 2012 and 2014.

Ted Walsh also knows what it takes to claim Aintree glory after Papillon’s success back in 2000 and his charge is a proven Liverpool performer, having finished third and then second in the last two seasons, being well backed on both occasions in the Grand National odds.

He has warmed up this term with a fair fourth behind Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup and a seven-length triumph in Grade Two company at Navan, a race Any Second Now won before his bold showing here in 2021.

Longhouse Poet @ 16/1

Martin Brassil sent Numbersixvalverde over from the Emerald Isle to prevail in 2006 and there is a lot to like about this nine-year-old, who once beat the mighty Monkfish in a Punchestown bumper.

Longhouse Poet travelled strongly throughout and was disputing the lead two fences from home before fading back into sixth behind Noble Yeats 12 months ago and returns on the same handicap mark.

Last year’s Thyestes Chase winner has claimed two victories this season at Limerick and Down Royal to take his career record to six scores from 19 outings under Rules and is fancied to go well at Liverpool, especially as there will be some cut underfoot.
