World Cup hosts Russia could do with a confidence boost ahead of this summer’s tournament, but we fear Austria will deny them such a fillip in Innsbruck.
Franco Foda’s side have beaten Uruguay, Slovenia and Luxembourg in their last three international friendlies and look a team on the upgrade.
That form makes 13/10 for a home win hard to resist in our Austria vs Russia betting tips.
A Look At Austria’s Betting Odds
Austria failed to qualify for the World Cup but were far from disgraced when fourth in a group featuring Serbia, the Republic of Ireland and Wales.
The pick of their four victories in that pool was a 3-2 defeat of Serbia in Vienna last October, three days before closing with a 1-0 triumph in Moldova.
Rapid Vienna midfielder Louis Schaub was on target in both of those games and November’s 2-1 victory against Uruguay.
West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic has also been regularly hitting the target for his country of late, including a brace in March’s 3-0 demolition of Serbia.
Bayern Munich’s David Alaba got the other goal that night, so Austria’s big guns are definitely firing.
There is a good blend of youth and experience at the back, with Watford defender Sebastian Prodl and Leicester’s Aleksandar Dragovic joined by Stoke duo Kevin Wimmer and Moritz Bauer.
Looking at the Austria vs Russia odds, we like 16/5 for a home win and over 2.5 goals in the game.
A Look At Russia’s Betting Odds
Russia are down at 66 in the FIFA rankings, a whopping 40 places below Wednesday night’s opponents.
They disappointed at Brazil 2014 and Euro 2016, picking up three draws and the same number of defeats from six matches at those tournaments.
During qualifying for the latter tournament, Russia were beaten by Austria at home and away, eventually finishing eight points behind the table toppers in second place.
Preparations for this summer’s big event have been mixed since an early exit from last year’s Confederations Cup, when they beat New Zealand but then lost to Portugal and Mexico.
November’s 3-3 draw with Spain was the pick of their friendly results, but there have been defeats against Argentina, Brazil and France, as well as a poor stalemate with Iran.
Krasnodar forward Fyodor Smolov was in fine form last season, while Yuri Zhirkov, Alan Dzagoev and Aleksandr Samedov are proven playmakers in midfield.
However, they do look vulnerable at the back, conceding three times in each of their last three games.
We’re finishing off our Austria vs Russia betting predictions by taking 17/4 for a home win and both teams to score.
