Qualifiers for the next CAN take place every two years

Some nations (Kenya and Zimbabwe) have still been included in the qualifiers despite being suspended by FIFA due to local government interference in the management of their football associations.

CAF said that if the suspensions of the countries concerned were not lifted a fortnight before the start of the qualifiers, both national teams would be eliminated from the competition. Consequently, their groups would only consist of three teams, with the group winner and runners-up qualifying for the finals.
