Champions League betting has taken an interesting turn, with odds for Arsenal to win the competition INCREASING after their first-leg defeat to Porto yesterday.
Along with Real Madrid, Man City and Bayern Munich, the latter of whom surprisingly lost to Lazio in their first-leg last week, Arsenal went into the knockout rounds as one of the favourites for the entire tournament. They were drawn against Porto too, with many Gunners’ fans confident that their side had enough to see past off Portuguese side.
However, that isn’t how things turned out though, as Arsenal conceded a last minute goal to give Porto a 1-0 win in Portugal heading into the second-leg next month, putting Arsenal at a disadvantage. As a result of the loss suffered by Mikel Arteta’s side, there’s been a shift in the Champions League betting odds in the process.
Arsenal, who were priced by bwin as the third-favourites to win the Champions League come June 2024 have now had their odds increased, with the bookies clearly not as confident in their chances of winning Europe’s top cup competition for the first time ever as they were previously.
Champions League betting
Going into the game, Arsenal were 11/2 to win the Champions League this year, but those odds have changed after their loss to Porto on Wednesday evening.
Now, coming out of their first-leg tie away in Portugal, Arsenal are 6/1 to win the Champions League come the end of the season. That could change if they manage to get through their tie with Porto and progress to the next round, as they’re expected to do. The Gunners have remained as the third-favourites though, behind Man City and Real Madrid and ahead of Bayern Munich.
As noted, the Champions League betting odds has Real Madrid as the second-favourites. Los Blancos were 11/2 going into their game with RB Leipzig, but after picking up the win in Germany, they’re now 9/2.
Man City went into the knockout rounds as favourites for the entire competition. After a 3-1 win in Copenhagen last week, their odds have changed from 2/1 to 7/4, with the bookies clearly thinking that Pep Guardiola’s side has a good chance of retaining their title and being crowned the Champions of Europe for the second year running.
As noted, Arsenal are the third-favourites, despite having been viewed as the fourth-favourites when the draw was made, behind Bayern Munich. Despite their loss this week, many feel as if the Gunners will still progress to the quarter-finals, explaining why their odds only increased from 11/2 to 6/1.
