Big Champions League Index: Current top 10
We have studied the data from the history of the Champions League to determine who are the current top 10 players in the competition.
Introducing the Big Champions League Player Index
Ahead of the Champions League returning this week, we’ve been looking to answer a fundamental question about Europe’s most prestigious sporting competition: just who is the best player? We’ve designed an algorithm that allows us to rank every player at any point in the tournament’s history.
Valencia vs Man Utd: Mestalla stalemate on the cards
Valencia and Manchester United pretty much already know their fate in Champions League Group H and that could lead to this being a low-key affair. There is still a slim chance of the Red Devils pipping Juventus to top spot, should they win and the Italian giants slip up at Young Boys.
Man City vs Hoffenheim: Depleted Blues to still wrap up top spot
Manchester City have qualified for the Champions League knockout rounds but still need something from their clash with Hoffenheim to make sure of top spot. That should encourage Pep Guardiola to field a strong side against opponents who must win to have any hope of a Europa League place.
Barcelona vs Tottenham: Spurs to come up short at Camp Nou
Tottenham can still qualify from Champions League Group B if they match or better Inter Milan’s result on Matchday 6, but that is a big ask, as Spurs visit Barcelona. The Catalan giants are already assured of advancing as pool winners but have a proud home record to protect in this competition.
PSG vs Liverpool: Reds tipped to hold their own in Paris
Liverpool have struggled on the road in the Champions League this season but we’re backing them to pick up a crucial point when visiting PSG. In an incredibly tight Group C, the Reds have six points alongside Napoli, with their next opponents a point back in third and waiting to pounce.
Juventus vs Man Utd: Old Lady to confirm superiority
Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a winning return to Old Trafford by setting up the only goal as Juventus made it three successive wins in Group H at Manchester United’s expense. United, five points behind Juve at halfway, are now in a battle for second after picking up just one point from two home matches.
Napoli vs PSG: Ancelotti to mastermind crucial home win
Napoli put in a fine performance when drawing 2-2 against PSG in France and are rated a value pick to come out on top in the return fixture. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have already beaten Liverpool in Naples and have every chance of qualifying from the ultra-competitive Champions League Group C.
Tottenham vs PSV: Spurs backed to prevail in open contest
Tottenham blew a great chance to kick-start their Champions League campaign when only drawing 2-2 with PSV in Holland and simply have to now make amends at Wembley. With both teams having already been beaten by Barcelona and Inter Milan, only a win will suffice in London.
Red Star Belgrade vs Liverpool: Reds too strong again
We completed a trio of successful tips as Liverpool got their Champions League campaign back on track with a 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade at Anfield. The Serbian champions simply had no answer to the relentless Reds, who can confirm their superiority by triumphing in the return match.
Real Madrid vs Roma: Whites more focused under new regime
Real Madrid begin their quest for a fourth straight Champions League triumph by taking on last season’s beaten semi-finalists Roma at the Bernabeu. The Whites will this time have to do it without key figures Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane to rely on for inspiration but can still shine.
AEK Athens vs Celtic: Hoops can hold their own in Greece
Celtic’s bid to reach the Champions League group stage for a third straight season is set to right down to the wire when they visit AEK Athens. The Hoops will travel to Greece on level terms following last week’s 1-1 stalemate at Parkhead, when their opponents were reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute.
