We’re tracking the World Cup 2018 top scorer odds for the current leading contenders to claim Golden Boot glory in Russia.
Colombia’s James Rodriguez took this award with six strikes at Brazil 2014 and these marksmen have already made an impact at this summer’s tournament.
CRISTIANO RONALDO (4)
The Portugal superstar was a popular pick amongst punters before Russia 2018 began but even his most ardent supporters will have been surprised by an opening hat-trick versus Spain. The first may have been a soft penalty and the second came via a David De Gea error, but Ronaldo completed the 51st treble of his incredible career in spectacular style, firing in a superb free-kick to level the scores. Added another fine header in the 1-0 win over Morocco.
DENIS CHERYSHEV (3)
Russia midfielder Cheryshev wasn’t on anyone’s radar for this market after netting just four times for Villarreal in Spain last season but he has made people sit up and take notice so far. Cheryshev only came on against Saudi Arabia after Alan Dzagoev was injured but then bagged a brilliantly-taken double and the way he made a late run into the box to score against Egypt was reminiscent of 2010 Golden Boot hero Thomas Muller.
DIEGO COSTA (3)
There were some question marks over whether Costa should start for Spain against Portugal but he settled that debate with a typically aggressive display and two contrasting strikes. The first was a fine individual effort and the second was a poacher’s goal as he prodded home from close range to finish off a slick move. Got lucky with his deflected effort versus Iran but they all count.
ROMELU LUKAKU (2)
The Belgium forward ended the club season under an injury cloud but showed his well-being in warm-up friendlies and maintained that momentum with a brace against Panama. The opposition wasn’t up to much, but Lukaku took his chances well and it is worth noting that Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard provided the assists, so he should continue to get great service.
HARRY KANE (2)
It felt like the England striker only had two touches of the ball in the game against Tunisia but that isn’t a problem when both end up in the net. The Tottenham ace latched onto a rebound for his opener and then glanced in a flick-on at the far post to secure a last-gasp victory for the Three Lions, so his predatory instincts are clearly tuned up for this tournament.
ARTEM DZYUBA (2)
Another relatively unknown Russian to make a splash in the World Cup 2018 top scorer odds after bagging just eight goals for Zenit last term. Headed into the net just moments after coming on against Saudi Arabia and then made the most of a starting berth versus Egypt with another strike. Can look cumbersome at times, but he’s getting the job done.
