France and Argentina have yet to live up to expectations at this World Cup and we’re anticipating a cagey contest when they meet at the last-16 stage.
Les Bleus are rated the better all-round team in our book, but Didier Deschamps seems reluctant to let his side cut loose and show their true potential.
La Albiceleste are always resilient, so this could go right down to the wire and 2/1 for a draw in normal time is our first France vs Argentina prediction.
A Look At France’s Betting Odds
France followed up workmanlike wins over Australia and Peru by playing out a bore draw with Denmark which suited both teams, so the jury is still out on this side.
In theory, the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele should be capable of lighting up this tournament.
However, that has yet to happen and Deschamps said: “It’s not that easy – look at big teams like Argentina, Spain or Germany, they’ve all had difficulties here.
“It was a difficult and challenging group but we’ve reached our objective. Now we have a second phase and we must climb to get to the next level.”
Deschamps seems to be holding France back with his safety-first approach and another tight tussle is on the cards here.
A Look At Argentina’s Betting Odds
Argentina made hard work of qualifying for Russia 2018 and again left it late in Group D after starting out with a draw against Iceland and a 3-0 loss to Croatia.
The two-time champions were less than five minutes away from elimination when Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo became their unlikely saviour in a 2-1 defeat of Nigeria.
A Victor Moses penalty cancelled out Lionel Messi’s brilliant opener, but Rojo volleyed home Gabriel Mercado’s cross to secure a thrilling victory.
“There was a lot at stake and of course it was a huge relief for all of us,” declared Messi.
“It was a difficult match because of the results before. We knew it was going to be difficult but fortunately we have achieved our aim.
“We didn’t think that we were going to suffer as much as we have. We were quite confident that we would be able to go through and fortunately it became true.”
The South Americans have lacked fluency going forward, with their build-up play being slow and ponderous, but Messi’s presence always commands respect.
We’re adding 3/1 for the scores to be level at half-time and full-time to our France vs Argentina betting tips.
