After failing to get the better of FC Bayern Munchen and Juventus in recent months, the Freekickerz crossed the continent to Manchester United’s Carrington training ground in search of a morale-boosting victory.
It all started so well, with the set-piece specialists racing into a 1-0 lead after the ‘Target Practice’ section of the competition, following United winger Angel Di Maria’s over confidence in trying to rabona the ball through one of the points rings.
To be fair, the Argentine was egged on enthusiastically by compatriot Marcos Rojo, who also failed to register in the round.
Luckily for the Albiceleste duo, the ‘Rabona Crossbar Challenge’ came next, with Di Maria proving his class by bouncing one of his two efforts off the top of the woodwork, for which the Freekickerz had no answer.
At 1-1, three-quarters into the final-round ‘Freekick Challenge’, United’s feted number one proved the hero with a whipped effort over the metal wall into the bottom left-hand corner, sending the Red Devils’ Spanish-speaking quartet of David de Gea, Di Maria, Rojo and Radamel Falcao into raptures.
It’s a tough beat for the Freekickerz to take, but at least they were downed by a renowned dead-ball specia…actually, there’s no upside here.
