Injuries, scuffed chances and the little-fancied QPR defence stopped the favourites in the Premier League top goalscorer race advancing any further this weekend.
While Robin Van Persie, Carlos Tevez and Fernando Torres were made to wait to extend their tally, some of the outsiders in the betting made a decent claim. I tipped Lukas Podolski as one to watch at 25/1 last week and sure enough the German striker has moved up to 18/1 as he netted with Arsenal hitting Southampton for six.
The Gunners midfield are starting to look more dangerous than last season and will be boosted further with the forthcoming return from injury of Jack Wilshere. Seeing as they helped Van Persie to the top goalscoring crown last time around, that Podolski seems to established himself as Arsene Wenger’s lead goalscoring option should see him to a decent tally by next May.
Dimitar Berbatov has seen his odds slashed to 33/1 after getting off the mark with a brace for Fulham on Saturday. The Bulgarian, top scorer in 2010/11, showed no sign of losing the deadly finishing that was never in question despite falling out of favour at Old Trafford.
Fulham would not be expected to supply Berbatov with as many chances he could enjoy as a Manchester United man, but Martin Jol’s charges deserve credit for firing ten goals so far this season (the joint most in the league with United and Swansea). Perhaps a wager on Berbatov could turn into a miracle investment – one thing for certain is that he continues in the form for which he started with the Cottagers his odds will be trimmed further in the coming weeks.
Among the more fancied candidates, Liverpool’s Luis Suarez moved up from 20/1 to 16/1 after answering some doubts about his finishing ability with his second goal of the season at Sunderland on Saturday. I feel Suarez’s hopes hinge on boss Brendan Rodgers successfully implementing his ambitious project of getting Liverpool playing expansive football.
