The first day’s play is already underway at the Open Championship, but a blockbuster trio of three-balls will mean there’s little chance of a post-lunch slump for golf fiends.
Seven of the current top 15 in the Official World Golf Ranking are out chatting the afternoon breeze on Merseyside and here’s how the cookie’s going to crumble.
13:58 – Zach Johnson to beat Martin Kaymer and Jason Day @ 11/5
Kaymer may have posted two wins in his last three tournaments, but in comparison to Johnson his past record at the links Major isn’t overwhelmingly positive reading.
T32 and snipped in his last two visits, the German can’t hold a candle to our pick’s T9 and T6 finishes in the same timeframe.
A missed cut in his final prep competition is enough to steer us away from Day in favour of Johnson, who carded four rounds of 69 or lower in at the John Deere Classic last time out.
14:05 – Bubba Watson to beat Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els @ 8/5
Since he pinged the lids like the perkiest pup at the dog track to snare the Masters in April, Bubba’s scorecards have been awash with sub-70 scores.
Hitting 69 or lower in the first round of five of his last six tournaments it’s unlikely his Royal Liverpool rivals will see him for dust on day one.
14:27 – Adam Scott to beat Justin Rose and Jason Dufner @ 6/4
Over the course of the current campaign Scotty has smoked his fellow post luncheon musketeers before the cut, boasting an average score of 69.55.
Rose is well behind on 71, with Dufner putting up a mean of 70.617 across the two rounds before the great divide.
The American has failed to make the cut at two of his four Opens to date, while Rose has been eliminated at halfway in three of his last four Claret Jug quests.
