A case can be made for there being a shock in a number of this evening’s Carling Cup third-round matches. Here, I’ve picked the two teams most likely to cause an upset, and those who back my tips in a double using bwin’s £25 free bet could find themselves £365.75 richer if they prove successful.
Arsenal might be struggling of late but odds of 25/2 on a Shrewsbury victory at the Emirates this evening indicate the Gunners will have little trouble in breezing past the Shrews.
Similarly, odds of 1/2 suggest Manchester United are unlikely to slip up in a cup tie against Leeds for the second time in less than two years.
More feasible upsets include Nottingham Forest finally finding some form and knocking out Newcastle and Leyton Orient defying odds of 8/1 and defeating a weakened Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
However, allowing for the fact that League Two Aldershot are favourites to beat League One Rochdale in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, my two picks for defying their status as underdogs this evening are MK Dons and Millwall.
Burnley v MK Dons
MK Dons are 11/4 to beat Burnley at Turf Moor, which looks a good price given the two teams’ recent form. While Burnley have yet to win at home and sit 20th in the Championship table, the Dons have only lost once in League One this campaign and have three away wins from four. Added to this is the fact that Karl Robinson’s side are looking potent in front of goal, with 17 scored in eight league matches and four put past Norwich at Carrow Road in the Carling Cup second round. As such, they look more than capable of knocking out Burnley in normal time.
Wolves v Millwall
Wolves are odds-on to beat Millwall at 22/25, with Kenny Jackett’s men priced at 29/10 to deliver an upset. While Millwall are hardly in the best of form away from home – they have yet to win on their travels this season – Wolves’ problems will give the Lions confidence. Mick McCarthy’s men have scored just four times in their last five games and have lost their last two. With Millwall keeping a clean sheet against West Ham in their last match they have it in them to keep things tight at the back, nick a goal and progress to the fourth round inside 90 minutes.
With this in mind, MK Dons and Millwall both look capable of beating their opponents this evening, and with combined odds of 1363/100 a small wager on an accumulator could pay off handsomely.
