Backing matches to have over 2.5 goals can be one of the most fun things to do as a punter – most of the time you’re cheering on every attack – so here is a trio of games from across Europe that have the potential to see three goals or more and pay us out at nearly 4/1.
Over 2.5 goals in Manchester City v Arsenal @ 31/50
When studying the fixture list on Sunday and looking for matches that will feature over 2.5 goals, there is one that just jumps up from the screen begging for us to back it – and that match is Manchester City v Arsenal.
It is the sort of game even a casual football fan could look at and say ‘there is going to be goals’ such is the attacking flair on display, but the statistics back up that view and then some.
City’s games at the Etihad are averaging four goals a match and six of their seven home games have obliged so far – the only one that didn’t was a 2-0 win over Everton, who came for a 0-0 draw and frustrated the Citizens until after the hour mark.
Arsenal will adopt no such tactics. Again, six of their seven away games have produced over 2.5 goals, the anomaly being an opening-day goalless draw at Newcastle.
In all league games, City and Arsenal lie in first and fourth place in the over 2.5 goals league table with 87% and 67% respectively and when you consider City haven’t kept a league clean sheet since October 1st (against Blackburn), this match has to be the cornerstone of the treble.
Over 2.5 goals in Juventus v Novara @ 13/20
Serie A leaders Juventus will be expecting a home win against lowly Novara at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday, but whatever the result it could turn out to be a high-scoring affair.
The Italian top league is not renowned for its goal-gluts and that is backed up in the statistics – only five sides in the division are averaging over 2.5 goals per game.
However, Juventus and Novara are two of those sides, lying in fourth and second place respectively in that table, and can be expected to continue the trend when they meet.
Struggling down in 19th position in the Serie A relegation zone, eight of Novara’s matches have featured three or more goals, five of those coming away from home. Four of Juve’s seven home games have seen the required goals, and only once in the last 12 matches have the hosts failed to score more than one goal.
Over 2.5 goals in Valencia v Malaga @ 4/5
Third faces sixth in La Liga as the race for Champions League places hots up in Spain and the fixture between Valencia and Malaga can serve us up some late-night Sunday goal action.
Any way you look at this match it seems there is the potential to complete our treble. If we look at the home side, eight of their last ten matches in all competitions have featured at least three goals – exactly the sort of recent form we are after.
At the Mestalla, the signs are also encouraging. Each of Los Che’s last five home games have had over 2.5 goals, and their last three in La Liga. They have only kept one clean sheet in their last six home fixtures and will be vulnerable to a Malaga side that have seen their fair share of goal action recently.
Four of Los Bloquerones’ last six games in all competitions have seen more than 2.5 goals, and in total 60% of Malaga’s league matches have had at least three goals, making goals likely in the last match of the European football weekend.
