Premier League: Tottenham to beat West Brom @ 33/100
Tottenham have been in imperious form at home this season, with six wins and a draw from their eight fixtures at White Hart Lane thus far. Only Man City and Chelsea have managed to take anything away from north London and prior to the visit of the Blues, Spurs had dispatched Sunderland, Bolton and Aston Villa without even conceding a goal.
Aside from the 5-1 thrashing administered by City in August, Harry Redknapp’s men have let in just three goals in front of their own fans and should prove far too strong for West Brom. Admittedly, the Baggies have been better on the road than at the Hawthorns, having picked up 14 points from their nine away matches, compared to a meagre eight from ten home fixtures. They will also offer a genuine goal threat with the likes of Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long in their ranks.
However, with home advantage and an extra day’s rest (Spurs drew at Swansea on New Year’s Eve and West Brom were beaten by Everton on New Year’s Day), the Lilywhites look set for another maximum haul, especially considering the ease with which they beat Roy Hodgson’s men 3-1 barely six weeks ago.
Copa del Rey: Real Madrid to beat Malaga @ 4/25
This one kind of picks itself, doesn’t it? Malaga may have brought plenty of decent players in during a big-spending summer, but they will surely be unable to stop a Real Madrid side who have generally been impressive at home this term. Jose Mourinho’s men have won every match at the Bernabeu in all competitions which hasn’t been against Barcelona, who beat them in La Liga and also picked up a draw there in the Spanish Super Cup.
For all their riches and top-four ambitions, eight points from nine away matches is a pretty poor return for Malaga. They may well be good for a goal, as Real have conceded ten in seven league games on home soil and even lowly Ponferradina managed one at the Bernabeu in the previous round of the Copa del Rey. But Mourinho is not afraid to pitch some of his big guns into cup contests – the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain all featured against Ponferradina – and anything other than a home triumph would be a huge surprise.
Oh, and did I mention what happened when Malaga visited the capital last season? They lost 7-0. In fact, they have never beaten Los Blancos in 23 previous meetings between the sides. I rest my case on this one!
Bwin Cup: Benfica to beat Vitoria Guimaraes @ 18/25
Now we switch to a favourite competition of this site, Portugal’s bwin Cup (ahem), as we complete Tuesday’s Banker Treble selections.
Benfica, who, along with Swiss side Basel, pooped Manchester United’s Champions League party before Christmas, have made a very impressive start to the new Liga Zon Sagres season. Jorge Jesus’ men remain unbeaten after ten wins and three draws in their opening 13 matches as they keep pace with Porto at the top of the league.
When they faced Guimaraes at Estadio do Luz earlier this season, Benfica raced into a two-goal lead in the first half before eventually winning 2-1, dominating possession (57% to 43%) and attempts on goal (18 to six). Benfica are probably not as short as they could be as the bookies factor in the impact of the winter break and a potentially sluggish return to action.
However, it is reasonable to suggest that having not played a competitive match since December 16th, Jesus will field a strong line-up to ensure his players are sharp for this weekend’s league trip to Leiria. But regardless of which team he sends out, Benfica should have enough in the tank to score a victory.
