Well here I am, sat here in my bath of beans, wondering where it all went wrong (and not for the first time).
Of course, I know exactly where it went wrong: Cardiff.
The New Cardiff City Stadium was the scene for what Steve Claridge described as “possibly the biggest upset in Championship history” as Cardiff City’s 100% home record was destroyed by Peterborough United.
More importantly, it destroyed my accumulator as the only one of four games not to produce the goods. Hull City beat Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth beat Colchester United, Stoke City and Everton drew.
All I needed was Cardiff to pick up their 11th home win against the team ROCK BOTTOM of the table… apparently that is too much to ask. But I’m not bitter about it, you understand.
Anyway, before I get beans all over my laptop, here’s this week’s four-match coupon. I have steered clear of so-called ‘sure things’ and varied the selection so that if something doesn’t come in, I won’t be quite as inclined to do my best Basil Fawlty impression using parts of my Christmas tree and my neighbour’s car.
Should you want to boost the weight of your wallet ahead of that annual food and presents day thing, then why not splurge the free £20 bet you get for signing up to bwin today on this acca and have a chance at a £224 prize?
It couldn’t happen two weeks in a row… could it?
Lazio to beat Sampdoria @ 13/10
Lazio have been in great form and lie third in Serie A ahead of the likes of Napoli, Roma and AC Milan. The Rome outfit are unbeaten in six and won five of those games, so will fancy their chances when they travel to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Sampdoria have lost half of their home games this season, including last time out against Udinese, and have lost nine of their last 12 overall.
The Biancocelesti won the last clash between the two in January 1-0 and with Miroslav Klose still banging goals in at the tender age of 34, coach Vladimir Petkovic will be hoping to keep their good run going.
Real Betis to beat Mallorca @ 7/10
Like Lazio, Betis are doing better than many expected this season, lying fifth in La Liga thanks to the goals of Ruben Castro.
Mallorca sit third from bottom and have the worst away record in the Spanish top flight, losing five of their last six, including a 4-0 crushing at Levante on their previous trip.
Betis lost to Barcelona in their last home game, but did beat Real Madrid before that thanks to a Benat Etxeberria strike. I would bet good money that they’ll dispatch Mallorca, which is kind of the whole point of this article.
Notts County to beat Leyton Orient @ 91/100
I’ll be honest, the chief statistic behind this selection is Leyton Orient’s stubborn refusal to draw games.
Only one stalemate this season means that 21 of their 22 games have had a winner; on ten occasions it was Orient, on 11 it wasn’t. So with a draw apparently out of the question, will it be Notts County or Leyton Orient who win this one?
Notts County are in eighth place in League One and suffer from inconsistency and Orient have won their last three away games, but given their loss at home to Scunthorpe last week, I am going with the assumption that their confidence will be affected, leaving the ball on this roulette wheel to land on black (and white).
Inverness Caledonian Thistle to beat Dundee @ 1/2
The nearest I’ve got to a certainty this week is an Inverness Caledonian Thistle win, which is a sentence that has surely never been written in a sane article before (not that this column has ever had any claims to that description, of course).
Terry Butcher’s side have been in unbelievable form in recent times and find themselves third in the SPL behind only Motherwell and Celtic.
Dundee are bottom of the pile having only been promoted as a result of Rangers’ financially-inspired relegation and have lost eight of their last 12.
Remarkably, Inverness have actually conceded more than Dundee (32 to 31) but have scored more than anyone in the SPL, including Celtic, and I reckon will have too much for the Dee.
Right, I’m about done with this bath. Does anyone know where I can get 88 slices of toast?
