The third day of the US Open sees two of the womens’ game’s brightest young talents throwing down in an attempt to make the third round.
Eugenie Bouchard and Belinda Bencic find themselves at diametrically opposite ends of the form-o-meter at Flushing Meadows, but both are expected to succeed and are amongst our day three best bets with the latest US Open odds.
In terms of form, the latest ‘Swiss Miss’ is easily the woman most likely to send Serena Williams’ calendar Grand Slam dreams down in flames.
She came from a set down to beat the American, before beating Simona Halep to win the Toronto WTA event in mid August and looked over the arm injury that forced her to pull out of Cincinnati in her first-round victory against Sesil Karatantcheva.
Bencic beat Doi in straight sets when she was just 16 (her opponent was 24) two years ago and should put her to the sword here.
The Canadian did little to convince that she has pulled out her post-Australian Open form nosedive in eliminating first-round foe Alison Riske, the world number 57.
Nonetheless she was able to overcome an early break, suggesting a modicum of resolve remains, earning 15 opportunities to do the same and converting five.
It was only her fourth win in 18 matches and she finds herself an odds-against underdog to a foe who hasn’t gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam in her last 21 attempts.
Hercog also beat Bouchard back in 2011, their only prior meeting, yet it has to be worth taking a chance on the 21-year-old being in command of enough of her 2014 class to defeat a rival ranked lower than Riske.
Berankis is ranked more than 60 places below the man he faces for a place in the third round, but the Lithuanian retains the best of the pair’s past head-to-head.
In total he has won five of seven previous sets against Goffin, including one in defeat on the hard courts of Chennai earlier this term.
