ATP Finals: Federer the one to beat

The ATP Tour season reaches its conclusion for another year at the glitzy ATP Finals at London’s O2 Arena.

The round-robin tournament, featuring the best eight players of the season, has a different look to it this season with regular contenders Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka all injured.

But two very familiar names are back after being forced to sit out 12 months ago. Against all expectations, 36-year-old Roger Federer and 31-year-old Rafael Nadal have dominated 2017, winning all four grand slam titles between them and five of the nine Masters events.

Federer’s decision not to play in the Paris Masters sadly deprived fans of a battle for the year-end world number one on the banks of the Thames, with Nadal having already secured that honour for a fourth time.

The Swiss arrived in London as the hot favourite to win a record seventh title at the tournament though. This is reflected in odds of 67/100 for Federer to lift the trophy in the ATP Finals outright winner betting; not exactly generous but all the indicators point to him.

He is on a 10-match winning streak after titles in Shanghai and in his home town of Basel but is well rested after pulling out of Paris and travelled to London early to begin preparations.

Federer is one of the greatest players ever on an indoor hard court and his record at the O2 Arena shows how much he loves the venue.

Nadal, meanwhile, has struggled with pain in his right knee while this is the biggest tournament he has never won. Add into the mix Federer’s four wins from four over his great rival this season, all of them on hard courts, and it is tough to make a case for Nadal springing the upset.

Outside of tennis’ two big beasts, there are three debutants in 20-year-old Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov and Jack Sock, while David Goffin has qualified by right for the first time having been an alternate last season.

Third seed Zverev and fourth seed Dominic Thiem have looked weary in recent tournaments so Federer and Nadal’s biggest challenge could well come from Marin Cilic and Dimitrov.

Cilic is 6/1 to win the Federer group while Dimitrov is included in our ATP Finals betting predictions at a tempting 5/2 to finish on top of the group led by Nadal.
